Hello all

Going to change the diff!

I have a current diff with serial number E88 1760 on it. Presuming 88 is year which would be correct.

I have an axle with 22L19750B - which I know is original for the 90 of my year.

What front diff do I need for the 90 eg 24 or 10 spline, 2 or 4 pin? Do I have a choice or would I need to change the back also if I wanted to go for, say, a four pin as I read they are tougher.

Thanks for any advice - I'm getting stuck into this tomorrow. I've got a good spare defender diff here which I will have to look at. If there are any tips for ID'ing it's type and appropriateness for my vehicle, that would be great.

Thanks

Jamesy

I am assuming that some defender diffs are different than others? Eg if I have a 10 spline can I it replace it with a 24 spline? Assuming that the ratios are always the same, then will any Defender diff fit?

Bad news guys - took off the gearbox tunnel for a better look at the 4wd/diff gear lever. The vehicle was sticking in diff-lock while the lever was in the normal position. It is possible I drove for over a hundred miles on diff lock.

So, I am guessing I have done a lot of damage to the transmission?

Jacked up the front axle. The front diff seems ok, wheels turning smoothly etc - was not grinding as suspected.

Transfer box is noisy at the handbrake drum end - sounds like alot of rattling about going on when run through the gears with drive in neutral, especially 4th and 5th. Have the bearings gone? (Inner and outer / front rear). Might be inner as the props are not engaged at this point.

It is driving fine, still with whirring from front prop area.

Just fitted a professionally recon'd gearbox so I am hoping this has not suffered as a result.

Well Well
We need an answer, Don't put it on full lovk get out and look you will not find it locking up in this way with PAS. Get somone else to put it on full lock with the engine running until the steering wheel stops. then ave a look and see whats catching if the radius arm is not being rubbed you could try low range and get the person to drive forward on lock and you have a look/hear and see what is going on as you walk past the mota. You have checked its not in difflock havent you? just a thought

DIng Ding Ding We have a winner (No comment)

I had a transfer box for sale but I think the guy is collecting it tomorrow for £60. If he doesnt take it it will be up for grabs.

by the way looks like you need to check your difflock switch wiring, bulb and switch thats should have illuminated if engaged.

Not always. you may have induced lots of wear. re do your adjustment so that it engages and more importantly dis engages when it needs to. Get ur light working its also important. right if its noisy drain the oil and refill it with fresh oil and slick 50. check the bearings when the oil is out for any play that shouldn't be there. if the bearings seem ok then run it and be aware that you need to find another transfer box. also you have put strain on every driveline component but just be aware and take thins easy. you will be ok. Jai

People will say lots about trans wind up and yes you have done some damage probably wear but it should be ok for a while if its that old you will find that the output mainshaft is probably worn and may well one day strip leaving you without drive into the transferbox input gear. leaving it in difflock will increase this wear but all you can do is check to make sure all is ok when the difflock is off or open. if it drives ok (bit noisey) then as above really keep an eye out for a transfer box and mabe a gearbox and fix the light and adjustment. if things don't look too bad treat it to fresh oil and molyslip (transferbox only not gearbox) Thats important! then use it

Cheers Jai

The gearbox is mint -as in completely rebuilt by a pro shop and it only went in last week. The guy who fitted it, also put in the transfer box - I was there giving him a hand to do it. I'm a bit annoyed that something as simple as ensuring the engage/disengage was working properly - was not checked during the fit. I will be asking for a transfer box and get it fitted locally.

good luck throw in that the difflock light did not operate and thats really important. I doubt you will get anywhere but if its only been a week it most probably be okays
