Steering failure for full out excitement

I am with @tottot
Have you just put it together and not tightened anything up?
Stalks shouldn’t turn so I guess stuff is not tight, wheel don’t even look like it’s pushed on far enough.

I wish! No its on tight enough to engage and does this with everything on. I took it off assuming something was wrong with the splines on the steering wheel. I'd leave this up just to stay humble though if it was that simple, ha!

Could you try this then...sounds mad

Jack up front end, take off steering wheel again, turn key, start engine and move drive wheels by hand. Get someone to see if the indicator part moves. This will rule out the steering wheel catching

This "play" only occurs so far when the key in ignition is turned on..
Anyone seen this before?

If the indicator stalk is moving, then the black “outer” of the steering shaft has to be moving, as that what it’s connected to. So if the black outer is moving, then it can only be something where it attaches to the bulkhead, either the brace inside or the main bolts on the engine side. There should be a solid piece that goes from the steering shaft up to the bulkhead inside. Make sure that’s fitted and tight. Then check under the pedals in the bulkhead to see if the 4 or 6 bolts are all tight. There is a clamp in there somewhere too. You should be able to see the bolt heads in the drivers footwell.

Edit: just watched it again. Does it feel “notchy” when you turn? It sounds like the bearings have seized and caused it?

Well! It was a bolt at the end of the shaft that keeps the splines engaged... M8 45 mm fix. Anyone ever have that happen?

Thanks everyone! Check those bolts! Wow

Do you mean on the steering UJ? If so, that shouldn’t cause the indicator stalks to move, as they aren’t bolted onto that part.

This guy was gonzo.

Yes that’s a steering UJ securing bolt. That shouldn’t allow the indicator stalks to turn with the steering wheel. I would check the steering column mounts.
That bolt holds the end of the shaft into place so that the "splines" line up. Male end, into female end. There is a groove near the end of the shaft that the bolt slides by. The entire shaft had popped out and was barely connected with it missing.

I’m not being funny, but I know what the bolt does, which is why I know that the black outer steering shaft cover and the centre steering shaft aren’t connected together. Look at your video, you can clearly see the indicator stalk move with the steering wheel when turned. Even with the steering shaft UJ completely removed, the centre shaft and outer cover shouldn’t move together.
