Steering damper

Hi guys,

Kai is working a a vehicle that has been donated to him. The steering damper mount is ker nackered.

Can I get a steering damper mount from a supplier or do I need to fashion one and have it welded on?

I can show photies if needs be, but from the position I would say that's about all it could be!

Go on then, give us a bit more of a clue ...

None of my Series had a steering damper, so a couple of pics of your layout wouldn't go amiss.

aren't they only fitted on later ones? or are they just an optional thing?

Could you cut the mount from another land rover chassis from a scrapyard or somewhere and re weld it onto yours?

@samc88 Possibly... But if necessary I could make one up I think. I am more concerned with the comments that say there was not a damper on series motors. I will take photo tomorrow, or browse my phone tonight and post the image.

I thought they all had dampers? Mines got one fitted anyway, heres some pics of the layout on it for Oldseadog

As far as I'm aware steering dampers were offered as an optional extra using a modified steering arm and bracket bolted to chassis

It certainly looks like the mount is in the same place to the ones pictured above

Brilliant, thanks for posting that! It's on my shopping list for tomorrow night!

There will be lots of other questions, I am sure:

Kai and I know little about what we are doing but learn quickly. We plan to spray the chassis with hammerite.... after repairing any bits that need it... and wax oil the whole damn thing!

Also weld the damper mount on the rear that is knackered and rebuild the motor having patched and painted and wax oiled the bulk head.

Good for a laugh!

Not much use without the damper or the mount on the steering arm though

The steering arm definitely has the mount. Kai has changed them on my disco in the past and recognises it

Easy then, you just need a damper

I'll get one of those today anorl, unless there's one with the motor... which is always possible.

There is a line of thought that having the steering damper just masks faults in the steering setup and a well serviced steering system does not need the damper .

Chris its not needed optional extra save the £20 or more ££ for something it needs

I think you are probably right: If it is not required then fitting it is silly.
