Hi can anyone tell me how i can tell if my steering damper needs replacing? Any advice much appreciated.

If you're getting steering wobble on rutted, uneven roads or after hitting small potholes then you might have a weak damper. Have you also checked swivel bearings, wheel bearings, ball joints, steering shaft and steering box? A long list I know but any one of these might cause your steering to feel a bit funny.

If you think its the damper, take it off and try and push and pull it. If it is quite easy then it probably needs replacing.

ere so i was mostly right then  :D:D

I drove a disco for months without a steering damper and it made no difference. The one on my 110 had almost completely rotted away when I got it. Fitting a new one made no difference. If you've got issues with steering wobble or suchlike the steering damper isn't the cause of it. It may help to mask some of the symptoms but you need to find out what's causing the problem and sort it out.

Hi thanks for the replies. Just to add some more info. The A frame ball joint, trailing arm bushes, swivel bearings, wheel bearings and ball joints are all new. I do however get a wobble under breaking. thanks again for your help.
