Does anybody out there who has changed their steering box know whether there should be a bush fitted to the steering box tie bar stud?

I've taken my box off for a refurb while the engine is out and there was no bush fitted but the hole that the tie bar stud (labelled no. 7 in diagram) goes through is much larger than the stud.

Both Haynes and RAVE do not show a bush but this seems a bit strange to me. Why such a large hole for the stud? I have an old poly bush that will fit but dont want to cause any problems if its not supposed to be there.

Spoke to my main dealer mechanic and he says its not bushed and never was. The reason for the larger hole is too allow for casting anomalies in the steering box and chassis variations. Reminded me it is a landrover and not an exercise in precision engineering. Says just to torque it up and forget about it so thats what I'll do.

I know this is an old thread - but just come up with exactly the same issue today. Over at Rimmers - they went through their manuals, i've also been through all the usual Haynes etc . . glad I found this!!! I can sleep in peace knowing the exacting tolerances that Defenders are built with lol . .
