Hi everyone & seasons greetings, my 300 tdi has developed yet another fluid leak which is comming from the underside of the steering box just where the lock nut is for the steering arm. Obviously there is a seal here, has anybody replaced this seal & how much of a job is it. Any tips/advise would be most welcome. Thanks snoops:confused:

Most advice I have seen is to replace the box, either with a good refurbished one or a new one. You can replace the seal, but there is often scoring on the shaft, so it leaks again after awhile

Hi Richard, thanks for the quick reply, that being the case i might let it develop as it does not seem to loose much fluid, it is just the drips on the drive which are annoying. Could not help notice you have an auto, don't know if you can help me but my gear selector panel is cracked. I managed to get one of flea bay minus a few bits, which i assume is a cover which slides with the gearshift & its lock nut, am i right in my thinking snoops

it can be done if you can get drop arm off (set of pullers and a lot of hammering using large punch as well)once drop arm removed ,remove dirt seal ,remove internal circlip, place container under box start engine work steering wheel till seal pops out ,fit new seal carefully prising out edge in fit steel washer replace circlip making sure circlip holes which are tapered have smaller hole to pliers (f...king annoying when people fit them wrong way round when trying to remove)fit new dirt seal then drop arm which has master spline
