Hi all,

Since fitting my recon pas box a couple of weeks ago, I have noticed that the steering is not balanced left-right. It is easier to turn left than right and also has less self-centering from left to centre than right to centre.

It's been bled several times and has no other faults at all, it's just a bit 'unbalanced' I am wondering if this is a box fault, or just a new box showing up vehicle faults that the knackered one was hiding.

I have had a cursory chat with national power steering who were very helpful but as it was a first call, the advice was to bleed it again, I have done this and will probably call them again this week.

I don't want to touch the adjuster because it's sealed and will likely cost me the warranty if touched. If they advise tweaking it, I will ask for some sort of written permission etc to cover my warranty.

Any thoughts??

First of all try to steam or presure clean then give a good amount of WD40 or sprayeble grease to the steering UJ before the box.... worked for me, the UJ was full of crap and turned harder one way

It looks shiny but I'll give it a go,
.

All the rod ends are new and the swivels look nice and shiny.

I'm tossing with the idea of asking for another unit and riskng getting one that leaks etc or just ignoring it.

its probably been adjusted to tightly, bleeding isnt necessary i nvever bother locl to lock is usualy enough they have a return pipe.the sector shaft (one with drop arm on)obviously turns in an arc and should hace free play either side of center and none at center this can be put in the wrong place when shimming input shaft ,i allways count turns from side to side and see if tightest spot lines up with center if it doesnt it will never feel right ,just over 3/34 turns from lock to lock

I was wondering about the adjustment, I'll check again tomorrow but last check I couldn't feel any slack at all.

I'll ask NPS before any adjustments as I dont want to cock my warranty up.

Ok, joints are fine, no change.

Rang NPS, authorised an adjustment, no change.

New box on the van today, hopefully fit it this week.

Pain in the arse. At least all the bolts will come undone easy :)

Ok, job done, took one hour start to finish this time :)

The feel is definately balanced now, it appears the other one was over powering the left side as this one feels like the right-side before and also like the old box did so it should be about right i guess.

The pump is groaning a bit now but as the fluid is foamy, im guessing there is air in there still, i have had many strange noises come out of our hydraulic machines at work until the air settles after a service had been done.

Hopefully that is the end of the saga, if so, then i am very pleased with NPS as they have been very helpful both over the phone and in getting the replacement box dropped off the next day. The credit for the original one has now been processed by paddocks too so thats ok as well.
