Evening all

Took my wife's recently-purchased Disco in for a belt change today to Nene Overland in Peterborough. Not massively experienced or very capable at home mechanics, so left it to those in the know.

Anyway, Nene were polite, friendly and relatively helpful but I had to bite my lip when we picked up vehicle as they'd taken upon themselves to steam clean the engine bay, saying they wanted to investigate an oil leak.
Fair enough, some might say, but the bay still had all the protective spray from when it was manufactured and I'd like it to have been left that way. Now it looks natty, like the sort of thing a garage would do before plonking it on their forecourt for sale.

Am I being overly picky here, or would this annoy the sh*t out of anyone else?

wunt annoy me as they were trying to do you a favor, the 'protective spray tends to just pick up ****e anyhoo, give everything a coating of wd40 if your worried (to be honnest i would have steamed it before now anyway)

Personally if a garage does any work without my say so I go nuts with them, but considering how oil leaks seem to manifest on Landy's they've probably done you a favour, my garage recently found a small leak in the diff whilst they were fitting my new gearbox/transfer box so it can be beneficial in some ways as I know to get it sealed up. As G-Man said that coating on engines collects all sorts of crud.

Did they find a leak by the way?

I think it would be a good thing - although I can see why it could be anoying too, I don't know what way I would go if it was me. If it was my 90 I would be ****ed as the wiring is very exposed on it at the moment, but then again it would probably not be in the garage.

If it was the Disco, I would be pleased, I spent ages with an ordinary pressure washer trying to clean it last Winter.

The protective film is just silicone spray.

If your worried give it a polish, I personaly would not use WD40 in the engine bay as it will just make it gather dust.

nah your thinking of spunk, you don't wanna be putting that in yer engine bay (unless your a perv or summat)
No its deffo WD40, we get loads a mobility scooters in and some daft fooker allas sprays em WD40 thinkin they are doin good to it, but once we charge em for cleaning, replacin mag break and gettin ****e out of the contacts to the motor they soon change there mind :D

They said they wanted to see it again to check where the leak's coming from, as they weren't sure.

Sorry to whinge but it just p*sses me off when people do things to your vehicle that you didn't ask for.

wouldn't bother me if they steam cleaned mine;)

as long as they didn't charge me for it:eek:

anyway i know where my leaks comin fron, its ****ing out the rocker cover:rolleyes:

if it stops leakin you know its gonna break;)

Hi DiscoTim, I know what u mean about the lacquer, but it dosen't last for ever anyway and then looks a mess as it starts to peal off.

With steam cleaning they also, or sometimes use a detergent that dries white so then they spray on more lacquer, but this time not that well and then it is a mess, so best thing to do is remove all the traces with some petrol.

If you want shiny bits to stay shiny then spray Holts Damp Start over whatever, it's a clear lacquer.
