Hi
I have a td4 Gs freelander 2001
i am having big problems with it starting its been to garage twice now and they cant find the problem with it, its been fully checked over engine, alternator , battery all new in last 18 months, new fuel pumps, new sensor
if is im told electrical

The problem is in a morning getting it started it wont start from cold, i have to keep stitching the relays and locking and unlocking it for it to eventually start, this can take from a few minutes to hours
today its having a bad day and wont start at all so far.
once its started and ran for a while and got warm it will kee starting all day as long as its not left more then 4 hours
can anyone give me any idea as to what it could be?
its been on the computer and nothing comes up?

I'm having a starting issue and from looking at problems and solutions yours sound like it could be the fuel pressure sensor.
Apparently the wiring corrodes.
Pull the plug off and take at look at the contact.
In some cases people have replaced that section of loom.
I'm no expert but an avenue for you to look at perhaps...

Saying there is a problem with the car's loom makes it sound like a biggie - if that is the problem (and as said it is a common problem) it is not a biggie. There is a replacement improved part that costs about £30 that simply plugs in replacing a small section of wiring.

Another common problem with starting is the cam position sensor. Unlike the loom, it is only used when starting the engine (I believe) - so if you have starting problems but the car runs fine once started, that would be on my radar. Have a search for starting and cam sensor to check that I got it right that its only used when starting.

Also, if once started there is lots of smoke, it could be 1 or more failing injectors - leaking fuel into the cylinders overnight. I think another check on this is if your oil level appears to be rising - or used to drop and now doesn't!
