Hi I am just looking for a little bit of advice on a problem I'm having with my RR 4.0.

A few days ago one of my top hoses blew whilst travelling along, the engine did overheat slightly but the red light didnt come on before I got chance to pull over. I took it to my local Land Rover dealer who said the engine was shot and I was looking at around £5000 to replace it - so I had all intentions of scrapping it or selling it on for parts. However since reading some posts on this site I thought I would give a few things a go to see if I can get it fixed without having to replace the engine completely. I should mention that I was loosing coolent before the pipe went, I had to top it up daily.

I replaced the burst pipe and refilled the anti freeze. The car now has trouble starting - I have to put my foot fully to the floor and after a few attempts to start it adventually goes - the first few minutes of running the exhaust is expelling out white smoke then it clears up. When driving the RR it drives fine and seems to pick up as before. The coolent pipes are all hot but I am able to squeeze them, then after about 10-15miles of driving the temperature gauge starts to rise and the coolent pipes become rock solid.

Other things I've noticed is that when I take the dipstick out there are small amounts of smoke that come out, the same with the oil cap.

The anti freeze doesnt appear to have any oil in it, however the oil cap does have about 3-4 droplets of water in it. I've not had a sniff test done (not that I claim to know what one is:confused:). I have tested the compressions and all the readings are between 135-150psi.

Does anyone have any other suggestions apart from replacing the engine completely as what this could be? (I really cant affort to replace the engine as much as I love the RR!)

Many thanks in advance for any help!

Sorry, im no expert but, Over pressureisation and the loss of that amount of water = slipped liners. I might be wrong.

Is the quote of £5k for a complete new engine?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yeah that was for a Genuine LR engine as thats only what my local independant will fit. I know I could proberly source a cheaper engine but at the moment its the cost involved.

the only way to find the issue for sure is to strip don te enine, te minimum it will nee is ne head gaskets.

you can get it to hat linered for aroun 100 quid per cylinder, then they rebore it to the same as standard, if the pistons and crank are ok you can replace the rings and big end bearings.

it may just be head gaskets and an easy fix!!!

dont run it tho it'll only get worse!!

Thanks Gav, yeah its looking that the only way is to strip it down and see..... Guess worse case the only thing I have to lose is my time, and hey it may be good news and only need a new set of gaskets :)

when you get it stripped you will know if its liners, take some good close up piccys and post em on here and we'll try and give advice!

Will do, hope to get it stripped down this weekend - any advice is greatly apprechiated - many thanks.

just work your way steadyly down the engine.

the bonnet locks in the horizontal position if you take the struts off theres some clips on the hinges!!!

you'll be able to see more that way!!

Just a quick question: are there any specialist tools, sizes etc that I should buy to get the heads off? My RR is a 1995 4.0 just incase that makes a difference.

ok no problem - many thanks again - I'll post some photos over the weekend, if it is a slipped liner could it just be one or two, or is it best to just replace them all incase they are on their way out given their inaccessability?
