HI I have a Freelander 2.0 diesel (1999)with an intermittent starting problem.
Turn the key and all dash lights come on as usual, small 'click' from under dash, blower stopped while trying to start, and nothing else. Found my way to the starter/solenoid and checked voltage on solenoid on starting - nothing. Disconnected main lead going to starter and jumpered solenoid to battery, nice big clunk and the engine turned over. Reconnected everything and engine started as usual. SO, does this point to the starter relay, or solenoid? If the relay where is it.....as usual the Haynes manual is lacking in location and my newly downloaded Rave manual is for 2001 onwards :(. Anyone get an idea where to look?

Cheers

More than likely either the solenoid spade connector ends are dirty(the ignition energizing feed) or the actual solenoid contacts and plunger within the starter motor have worn.
Very easy to replace and fix, costs about £8 off ebay.

Thanks for the reply, nice to know that somthings cheap for this money pit. Cleaned the spade as a 'first' try method, slight corrosion on there, but with no joy. If the solenoids faulty did I really make a difference connecting it straight to the battery or was it just chance?

P.s. this is why i'm thinking starter relay. If I could fing the thing then I might be able to test it, always the esay option, thats me.

Relay-
From memory as Im at work-
Look behind the battery and ecu and you will see three relays, two yella and one black.
Black is the glow plug relay and im sure one of the yella ones is the starter relay.
Swap the two yella ones around and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for that Den. Swapped them round but still no joy. But it did give me another test point - no 12v from ignition. supplied 12v to solenoid pin (87) and engine turned over. SO I think I'm looking at a new ighition switch, ha, well I say 'new' at the moment i'll take what i can get lol. Cheers again, at least it not a VCU, Oil cooler or rear window mech:D
