Although I have a Disco 1 of my own, I also look after some vehicles for our Gliding Club and we have a 2002 Freelander Diesel. The problem is that it will start fine from cold and continue to run so long as it is not switched off. If the engine is stopped it will crank over but not fire unless it is switched off completely for around one minute, after which time it cranks, fires and runs OK until again switched off.
If re-starting in less than a minute is tried it sometimes fires and runs for one or two seconds, then stops.
It sounds fuel supply related, but has anyone any experience of this with their Freelanders?

Does this car get used much?

I have no idea what the problem is sorry. My wildest thought is that maybe there is excessive water in the fuel system and its vapourising when hot and blocking the fuel system when its stopped pumping - but I have no real substance to that thought!

Incidentally, have you heard of Omarama Gliding Club here in NZ? Not into gliding myself, but pass the airfield quite regularly and its supposed to be quite well known around the world and an awesome area for gliding. Non gliders should click on this link, the intro video is great...

When the camshaft position sensor is on its way out it does that.
Also the crankshaft sensor,
and the coolant temperature sensor,
also the high pressure fuel pump seal.
Take your pick, but I've listed them in order of most likely to least.
