Starting issue. Chugs and dies?

How likely is it that all 4 have failed for me @sierrafery ?
not unlikely ...happened to me too and to others
My understanding is there are two types that will come up on a parts search for a 15P,
AFAIK it's only one correct type and that's given by the LR part number not by other search so as long as it's ERR6066(can be any brand) and sold by dedicated LR parts shop it's good for all Td5s no matter what P engine it is, generic shops can mix them up yes

Been having a seeminy intermitant starting issue fot the past few weeks.

Started when we where at the foot of the Pryenees on a cold morning. Went to start and the engine "turned over" but was chugging, rough idle and just didnt sound happy. Ran like this for a few seconds then died.

No fault codes, no lights, no smoke. Try again and starts happily as if nothing is wrong, runs perfectly well too.

Doesnt happen often, mostly when the landy is very cold so have been keeping it garaged and it sarts in there zero issues.

Been trying to catch it on video but everytime I go to record it starts fine!

Battery is fine reading a healthy 14.2v on the volt meter
Crank sensor is genuine LR and less than a year old
Injector balances are within the norm
Touch of white smoke on start up occasionally
MAF ideally needs changing (reading 54ish on nano) however reluctant to change as been through 3 in 2 years (all VDO/Siemens)
MAP recently cleaned
AF recently cleaned (pipercross)
EGR blanked
Injector harness gen LR roughly 18 months old

Not checked ECU red plug yet but was cleaned 2 years ago, so probs needs doing!

Can only suspect glow plugs maybe? Not sure what else

Cheers :)
mine does this also even on a hot day 40 degrees and is intermittent ever since i ran i injector cleaner through the system so i can rule out glow plugs ..up to now i have have closed in on the injectors as i suspect have one leaking number 3 and depends when the engine comes to rest for a length of time only and position of the cam shaft pushing down on that injector for long periods when the engine is turned off
i highly doubt its a glow plug issue only reason being there is enough heat and compression to first start the engine in the first place

however i could be wrong in your case and it could also be possible your fuel system is contaminated with two much water and and slightly freezing

Yes I understand their importance even after being told by numerous diesel specialists they're not needed
Read a few of your historical posts on other forums actually concerning td5 glow plugs
its funny because the work shop Manuel doesn't explain why they installed 4 glow plugs on a 5 cylinder engine ? am i missing something and number 5 piston is redundant on start up and warm up periods ?
what ever happened to the good old heating element inside the air intake found on some larger 6 cylinder engines that dont run glow plugs

There isn't room for a 5th plug cuz the FPR is in the way

no **** blame the engineers who designed the cylinder head
so the questions about number 5 cylinder does this warm as quick on cold starts and why it doesnt need a glow plug ? and length of time they are are on for to get the engine up to operating temps (emissions )

Yep, using ERR6066 with most of the UK motor factors even along with the VIN / Reg will bring up two versions, which is not unusual for most vehicles but in this case as you say only one is correct.

i heard its coz the whole industry was based on the sale and demand of four plugs etc.......
what is this the twighlightzone so this means if one glow plug fails i need to buy four pack and not purchase them individual ......like we can purchase one injector at a time just saying

IMO that was not the best ideea to fit only 4 instead of 5 and to see what difference they make even if you dont feel it compare the look of cyl 5 with the others when you remove the head if the existing 4 were functional all the time, at above 20*C only the post-heat operation is missing but they work for pre-heat all the time just that the warmer the coolant is the shorter they'll glow

ever sat in the back yard or garden and notice in some corners it collects debri from a wind trap location (manifold design )
i am not here to argue but i can relate back on 40 degree day where my glow plugs are not needed and i suffer the same symptoms of the OP

Good practice to swap all of em out even if just 1 fails. On any car

I think @KISSMYAURA had his tongue firmly in cheek there though ;)

good practice once you have found the culprit .... would you change out all injectors if one fails ?
as for calling out members like KISSMYAURA[ i am insure where this is leading to

I dont want to argue either nor did i say that the glow plugs are the root of the OP's problem i just said that they must be ruled out as they are all shot, also if you have the same symptoms at 40*C you can't compare that completely with the OP cos he said in the first post

Just because you've normally had to get other components out the way first. And cost is a lot less than an injector so no point comparing is there. I'm not being LR or td5 specific.

And trust me fella, I ain't calling anyone out. Why would you think anything's leading anywhere?

i also undderstand where your coming from fella

but there seems to be enough heat and compression for the engine to start in the first place as glow plugs do not work like a spark plug

specially when its an intermittent issue and how many 4 glow plugs have the same intermittent issue all the same way

what phases me is why the engine starts in the first place so how can this be a glow plug issiue enough for an engine to cut out or stall out once running
as i said i have the same on a 40 degree day

Managed to catch it on video

Doubt its freezing its not been that cold yet!

Hello banks and good day to your sir!!

Haven’t been on here for a while but noticed your cold start troubles, my old discovery used to do exactly the same as what yours does in the video (sold now) I’m intrigued to know what the issue is as I never got the the bottom of it... Mine was like that for years, only did it in the winter months... Not much help but I hope that you have more patience than I do... I’m no mechanic but keep it swinging until it starts and avoid revving the engine like in the video

All the best to you man!
