I'm trying to start a s3 2.5 diesel that hasn't started for 18months!!

I tryed earlier with a 70ah batt off my van, but it didn't fire up, but it wasn't turning quickly at all.

so tomorrow i will try with two 70ah batts in parallel, is there anything i should do that would help to see if the engine will fire. I just wanna see if the engines okay...as i'm thinking of buying it. The guy said she ran 18 months ago, but has a prob selecting any gears. i'm not bothered about the box as i will use this landy for spares and i want the engine.

cheers

bon fete

Bleed the cav pump until diesel runs from the bleed screws, any air in the system will cause you problems.
Ensure all earth lead connections are clean and tight. Dip the clutch to lighten load on starter motor.
Best of luck.

You'll need a way bigger battery.

Mine hadn't moved between june and october so we got one of those battery boosters, but not for cars, one for big diesel engined trucks, plug into an industrial mains supply and she lit up like a xmas tree!

You might find the clutch has stuck together with it parked up that long hence no gears. Mine was. You can always try starting it in gear with the clutch down to tell if it has stuck. Have your other foot hard on the brake in case it starts up.
As for the starting it'll take a load of cranking and priming. Maybe crack open one injector to see if it has fuel at the injectors.

i once bought a 2.25 diesel that had been stood a fair while. After towing it to the pub and back (twice) it still wouldn't fire. Turned out that the stop lever inside the side of the pump had jammed, and needed freeing off.

I put two batts in parallel, re fitted the earth able and cleaned up the terminals et and turned it over constantly until the batteries started to tire but still wouldn't fire, she was turning over quicker than before but still wouldn't turn.

But today i went back with a new battery and after a couple of turns she fired and ran okay. I think maybe the bores where a little rusty so she needed turning over a few times to get things lubed up. Its funny two batteries in parallel were not as strong as one new one, and both the other batteries had been on charge and were reading 100% okay, but i have read that when in parallel if one isn't in the same condition or even of the same type this can effect the performance.

Thanks guys

I'll post some picks when i get her back home.
