Arse!
I think the TD is 2.2 kw, will a TDI fit? I believe they are 3.1 kw? Extra Kw wont make a difference will it?

I ran a tdi starter on an early 2.0 litre derv and know they are common mod on the 2.25 derv nor sure on the 2.5.
They certainly wanged the old 2 litre over and it would start easily no matter the weather.
Even the ****epart ones arent bad, not top quality, but then not top price.

Thanks James, The old TD cable should be man enough for the extra draw from the starter?

I fitted the starter from my 2.5na as the one on my tdi replacement engine didn’t work after we had dropped the engine in, 3 years later and it’s fine, it starts quicker than I can let go of the key if you see what I mean.

I didn’t realise they were different ‘oomph’ in them though

From what I can gather 1990 was the turning point, so some TD's would have had the 3.1 also, which makes sense as that was also when the TD's were upgraded.

Aah okay, mine was a 1991 2.5na (army engine downgrade) but everything else is right for the 1991 stuff (badges etc)

Any way to tell externally what starter is what?

Only by looking at whatever part numbers are on it, if any, not sure if they physically look different, quite a few manufacturers make starters that fit this application.
