HI All,
Is it possible to repair/refurbish a starter motor at home or does it need to be sent off as so to speak or would I need to buy a new one. At present there is not a serious problem but now and again when I turn the key engine turns but then suddenly stops. I then turn the key again and it fires straight without any problems, I have noticed this happens when its very cold outside.

Cheers

Check the connector on the starter motor signal wire. It's an extremely common problem as LR fitted really ****e ones in the factory. Better to eliminate it from suspicion - spade connectors are ten a penny ;).

As Will said check the spade connector as they co corrode. It's not just confined LR though as all Lucas starters and others have used the same connector for the last 50 years ;)
If it's corroded give it a clean and cover it in Petroleum Jelly.

Really Nodge? That's very poor as they is a shower of ****e . Haven't had a peep of trouble from mine since I replaced it, got a bit ****ed off when I switched off ignition at some lights I knew would take 5 mins to change - then the bastard wouldn't start and I was at the head of the que!!!!!!

I was not popular with the other drivers :(...

The corroded connectors thing has got worse over the years but I suspect it's nothing to do with the actual connector and more to do with the time cars last these days and the fact that modern engines don't spray oil vapour around the engine bay like cars of old which generally keeps the corrosion off!!

Hi
I had the same problem, sometimes all i got was click when i turned the key then after a few tries starter would turn. Then it could be ok for days, always worse when very cold.
I fitted the repair kit as mentioned in post above, took about an hour to do. I also checked and cleaned all the electrical connections when refitting starter.
As you can see from pic contacts were not too good. So far so good after 2 weeks looks like its fixed:)

On the back of this I tried to get 10 for a penny - the shopkeeper wasn't having a bar of it

My 1.8 petrol won't turn over....AGAIN! When this happened before the AA man spotted that the spade connector had come adrift from the starter and fiddled about and managed to refit it by digging deep into the engine compartment. I've tried to identify where the wire is and what it pushes onto but cannot work it out. I'm not very technical! Does any one have a diagram or photo of where I should be looking and what I need to do? Many thanks, Roodle
