Sounds like the contacts in the starter are stuck. You have connected the battery cable to the correct post on the starter I assume.
Yeah. Can I repair the solenoid at all or is it going to need changing?

You don't necessarily need a repair kit to repair the starter. There nothing to stop you stripping the solenoid and cleaning the contacts
It's worth checking the thin red wire isn't live all the time before condemning the starter too.

Ill get on that now. I am sure its not. It was working fine before I changed the engine. So more than likely the solenoid has been damaged. More than the odds of the ignition switch anyway.
