Starter motor problems?

that's designed to confuse - it wont be a "connector" or a terminal block it'l just be a series of looped wires IE one terminal with a couple of wires going to it and the on to the next

the circuit diagram shows the starter solenoid as the common point - this effectivley is the connector for the high current glowplug/charge circuit

i allways try and run direct from the alt to the batt this then avoids a single point of failure

Oi i could get yin fi paddocks but they sell those preson****e yins and i rea nothign but bad stuff about them, it was a valeo or whatver the french yins are called thats in it so not original starter so i aint gona buy yin of those either and for the price o a boch i can buy a 200tdi.

There a boy on these forums selling a N/a engine and aww the parts including anewish starter for good moneya nd seems a nice engine so i tempted to buy that.

basically i do alot of walkign with me 2 springers and i need to know its all good and i just dont trust it the now for distance travel, body and chassis are spot ona nd rust free but i like to know my vehicles ina dn out.

My transit i can fix with my eyes closed and know exactly evrypart of it and whats a probklem on them etc,. subaru a peice of computer controlled **** and i just dont know nuff yet boot landys to trust her fully so i reakon take her off the road and check it aww. I dinny like the wiring it looks old loom been found lying aboot.

Gota love em thoygh its now in bits in my drivce hehe befor i moved it to the spot ill fix it on doh doh.

The unti i got was delco remy reaplacmant and they are very nicly amde with a good test certificate with each model... Still no work :( .

It is abloody weird one to be honest it worked fine one minute with a few noises fi the failing starter clutch but not bad nuff to stop the motor from failign then nothign just spins. Think when i get abck fi me moor treck in the borders im gona do a few tests on certain wires, atleast if i melt anyhting i was intending on rebuilding the looma nyhoo, It must be a combination of thinhs surly but i just canny find simialr anywre adn that auto spinnign up of that delco remy starter when i conencte th batter really got me puzzled.

Atleast the radio works hehehe

See now i google the numbers youi agev me befor and it brigns up the same things, id=f a deflo ramit starter its fi the defender 1990 onwards,
and that cross mates with a velco french yin and the bootch.

Some ****s is having a l;augh m8.

betetr no be some wee **** ned has crawled into my engine bay and tried to steal sutin. I got a really big hunting knife for fishin and ill chop em into ****esa nd use him as bio fuel.
 
:D Oi might been bit drunk last few replys anyhoo!

Right got the beasty workign again, got a replacment starter after returning that other yin, and its all good works a treat. Actually surprised just how much better it is after a week or 2 of freezing nights and no starts once hooked up waited just 8 seconds and started strongly and very quickly a few turns of engine at most.

very pleased this is sorted now.

Bored. If you hear a click when you turn the ignition key then the bendix sounds likes it could be jammed or the solenoid isn't working. The purpose of the bendix gear is to throw forward the engagement gear to the flywheel from you're starter motor. Take the starter motor off and have it checked by an auto electrical place. If the teeth are worn on your starter then you need a new one. Check your fly wheel. Cheap route: Put the vehicle in 2nd gear and push it forward: ignition off. Rock it. Then put it in reverse. Rock it again. I done that when I broke down outside the sandwich shop. Laffin.
 
LMFAO. "Theres wires with bits on them going down the same hole and I changed the glow plugs and it made it a bit better, but now it's not." Duh. Singing "Yer glow plugs connected to the starter, the starters connected to me earth lead" Just watch that your tappet clearence don't drop into yer foo foo valve. Question: are your plugs wet after 5 minutes of running. Cos theres nothing like a wet plug for fuel economy.

The flywheel looks like it has not even roated but you can see where the starter cog has slid onto it and at that point failed to rotate the flywheel, so would this be cause the starter motor spins both ways easily and is slipping and spinning up but not engaging? just trying to figure this out befor i have to either buy a new unit or investigate the flywheel.

Just to clearup befor it died the starter motor was making some real bad noises and slipping with slow rotation then normal.

Remember, in an in-line 4 cylinder 4 stroke engine the engine always stops in one of only TWO positions, so only two small sections (exactly opposite each other) of the ring gear get smacked by the starter pinion when you turn the key.

In the olden days of inertia "Bendix" engagement starters those two sections of ring gear got bashed to bits, so we were prety good at replacing ring gears. Pre-engaged starters don't cause as much damage, but they do eventually bash the ring gear teeth visibly.

Speaking of starters, I need one for a 2.5 NA or 200tdi. Anyone?

Cheers for tat info CharlesY ..... See when you say that the engines onyl stop in 2 positions why is this? just curiouse as my next big job is to do my timing belt and i know the engine needs to be in a certain position.

The old starter i ahve already stripped cleaned and now just lookign for a place that sells the starter gear that pops in and oot as evryhting else looks fine.And the starter passed the benchtest minus the slipping gear.

By end of Febuaru weather permitting i hope to ahve all my wee bits n bobs done on the landy so appriciate aww the advice given.
