I am about to replace the brushes on my series 3 petrol starter, all the brushes I see for sale have both Negative and Positive sides as on complete set each, the ones on the negative side in my starter are separate wires each soldered to individual posts. Should I cut the new wires and solder them to individual posts or solder the whole wire across both terminals.

I didnt even know they were positive/negative and Ive got a new set on the.shelf in my garage. I would just replace them as the old ones were fitted.

Hi Col, yes, there is a positive pair fed from the battery positive terminal via the solenoid and the negative pair that are attache to the stator. I agree, I think I will solder them on as the old set were.

Do a good job of the soldering. I suspect a lot of starter issues are due to soldered connections becomming dry joints.
