When driving at leisurely pace, I move off by slipping 1st gear to neutral to 2nd and all is smooth.
On occasion, I have accelerated more quickly from the off, shifting from 1st to 2nd without the pause at neutral.
Sometimes it goes to 2nd gear smoothly, but on occasions it graunches horribly
Is this a characteristic of the agricultural gearbox, or from what I have described have I got gearbox problems heading my way?
No other problems, except 5th wont drop directly to 4th, so I have to go to 3rd then 4th to use gradual engine braking. Thats not a big deal tho`.

could be that you are trying to shift too quick for the clutch to keep up

Mine does the same if I change gear too quickly. And thats even after having the synchro mesh changed!

Ive learnt to changed gear in a more relaxed manner.

Mine does the same going into third - syncromesh is probably a bit worn, but if your gentle with it, and let it work (i.e. pull it slowly into gear) then it will last a lot longer

Therein lies the problem James. I came from a modern sports car to my Landy.
I need to recalibrate my brain to slower, even when I want to `nip in`, in heavy traffic.

Treat the box with a bit of respect, they really are quite strong if a bit agricultral, and use your brakes to slow down and block change from say 5th to 2nd to pull away, saves your clutch as well.

Unless your driving in conditions that need engine braking.
