Hi there!

My disco 2 2003 has the srs light On. When i read the fault with the nanocom i get fault code 008 ‘the drivers airbag measures open circuit (permanent)’.

Does this fault tell me that my airbag is open circuit or that the drivers airbag circuit is open ? Because i read a lot that the Rotary coupler fails often but the Rotary coupler is not easy to buy here in Belgium or it is crazy expensive from the UK. Is it common that an airbag measures open circuit ?

Trying to go to MOT but think its a hard red cart with a srs light On 😅

Thanks in advance!
Manu

Had same problem on mine just before Xmas at the same time due MoT!!

Lots of advise on here for the issue! Did go through system check, same issue coming bad on the reader!!

Changed the Coupler?? Took a couple of days to receive it!

There are a few on ebay!!

hi, thanks for helping! Yes i read a lot of advice but i still didn’t find te answer i am looking for 😅 your fault reader gave the same fault? And you changed the Rotary coupler and that helped your problem? Are they to be trusted the ones on eBay ?

Yes! Gave the same reading.
I did check from the coupler! To the driver side connection under the seat! No problems along the way!

If like mine! It's a 20+ years old car! Somethings are going to Fail! And it doesn't matter if its brand new or 2nd hand!!

Mine is still going 😁

It was clean! Unlike some shown on ebay!!

NB: £25-40/€30-60 is still a lot better than £250-£350/€300-€400 New!!!

So often it is the connection in the yellow wires under the seat. i have had this on and off for years and so far it has always been this. My MOT tester told me a lot of people simple solder the wires together by passing the connector.
I have used a choc bloc.
Typical that no code reader seems to be able to tell you this.

Oh okey, but isn’t the connection under the drivers side not from the seatbelt pre tensioner ? I think the Wires for the airbag go from the DCU under the center console ( C0256) to the connector ( C0257) under the dashboard next to Steer column and from that connector to the connector from the Rotary coupler and from there to the airbag. So i think the cable under the Seat has nothing to do with the drivers side airbag ? Okey i might have to look for one on eBay, thanks for the help! :)

Hi there!

I think that yellow cable under the Seat is from the seatbelt pre tensioner and not the airbag :) or am i wrong ?

Hi All!

Yes it is as you say! But it does not hurt checking all connections!! To that system!!

If you go back on the Threads on this website! It has been found that the same reading we have mentioned! Was given for the connections from the Airbag in the drivers wheel to the connector under the seat!!
Same given for the passenger side!!

If I remember!! There was an exposed/damaged cable under the seat on one thread! And a loose contact under the seat! But giving the same reading?

All part of the SRS System!

Hi, as long as the code points to the driver's airbag the problem is on that circuit or with the unit itself, most common fault ism the rotary coupler but you can use a resistor to check: SRS emulator.... fiddling with pretensioner plugs under the seats for that specific fault code is like a massage to a wood leg

I hate to say this to you @sierrafery as you are the guru of all things electronical on Disco 2s, but I can only say that the SRS light comes on and I fix it by fiddling with the connector with the yellow wires under the driver's seat.
It may not make any sense from the point of view of reading circuit diagrams etc, but it is a very well known fault and it does manifest itself with the SRS light coming on.
If this only happened once I'd accept that it might have been coincidence and something else fixed itself, but this happens to me regularly and it does to others to the extent that the MOT guy said what he said.
Maybe quite simply the SRS light comes on to warn of a problem witt the seatbelt tensioners as well as the airbag? I just don't know.
I'd love to know, I simply don't.
And No I HAVEN'T checked the code. I just fix the problem. So it may have a different code.
As you are discussing this with us next time it happens I'll see if my flipping Foxwell will read a code and if it does I'll tell you about it. ;)

If by fiddling with the connector under the seat fixed it then the code is definitely not about the airbag, if you get airbag fault code you can fiddle the sh*t out of the pretensioner's connector cos it will have no effect, it's like you get a MAP sensor fault code and replace the MAF for it... IIRC the code should still be there in the DCU memory if you didnt erase it

+1

The DCU uses separate pins & circuits for the airbags and pretensioners so it's virtually impossible to mix things up. A fault on the pretensioner circuit will result in a "Pretensioner Open Circuit" message.

Cool i didn’t know there was a tester for it! I think it is the Rotary coupler because yesterday i tested a spare airbag that my brother had. The fault is still there so it seems almost not possible that 2 airbags are faulty. I have ordered a coupler so when that arrives i test that. Thanks for the help :)

Pretensioner fault will put up the warning light BUT give a different fault code on a scanning tool. Underseat connector faults are common on many cars, often caused by people shoving things under the seat.

As I said I haven't put my Foxwell on it yet.
I'll do it when I have the time.
Extremely busy at the moment.
I hope I do find something then I'll be able to post it up that others might gain from it.

So srs light is away from the dashboard after placing the other Rotary coupler. I did notice that the fault on the nanocom stays there but instead of ‘permanent’ it became ‘intermittent’. Anyone knows why ? Can’t delete it so thats weird. For MOT I think i Will be okey because the srs light is gone.

Thanks in advance!
