Hi all,

Hope some one can help, My Discovery 300TDI (97) has an annoying squeek comming from under the bonnet, the noise starts at around 30MPH and just gets noiser, soon as i let upon the accelerator the squeeking stops.

This is what i've done so far to try and resolve the noise,

1) I've changed the drive belt tensioner bearing,
2)the drive belt (7pk 1580 correct one),
3)water pump bearing seems ok,
4)Put a Penny behinde the drive belt tensioner.
5)Checked the AC/ belt.
Just done approx 100miles towing a caravan and it was constantly whining, (wasnt the missus)
Any suggestions / ideas would be grateful.

Probably not the reason, but having had numerous squeaks from what were thought to be various bearings etc my noises were eventually removed by changing the drive belts.

Always used the standard belts but now will only use the Continental ones as they have a rough back. This also has the advantage of not losing the power assistance when going through deep puddles and streams. Now have a quiet Disco.

check the bearings in the alternator.you can try running it without the belt on and see if the noise disappears (but not for long).

I had this on my Disco...I checked everything as I thought the alternator could'nt possibly make that noise, but it did!

hopefully getting an alternator from co-pang-yang, this weekend, as the noise only kicks in at approx 30mph, i cant really drive it with no belt Ie: power steering etc.. will end up with more problems!!:(
if that fails gonna borrow a drive belt tensioner
cheers bemmy

seems a good suggestion, the one on is a genuine landrover one, have a spare one, (not continental) will try that one see how it goes, do you think maybe rubbing a bit of emery cloth over the drive belt wheel?

Is it a squeak or a whine when my throttles pressed I get a slight whine.let off n it goes off.
Haigy,
it starts squeeling at approx 30mph, but just replaced the landrover drive belt with a rough sided one and its reduced the pitch / volume no end but still there.

philip,
Just put my spare drive belt on which is rough sided on the top, and this has reduced the volume of the squeel no end, but its still there, going for a 20mile drive tommorow which may give it chance to 'bed in'??
thanks for tip pal.:D

i had an intermittant squeak that sounded like alternator bearings but eventually tracked it down to a front propshaft uj...had me confused for a day or two
