As I start up my Landy let's out a 'wake the dead' squeal. Which keeps going for a bit. Then stops after driving for 5 minutes. Is this likely to be the fan belt?

Well it would not hurt to change it for a good quality one.

@brian47 on our D2's.

We were discussing this the other week what did you do to solve it? Just the belt or the tensioner as well? mine stopped making the noise on its own.

Cheers

Yeah, in that very hot weather we had a couple of weeks back, I had the feeling that the aux drive belt had expanded a bit due to the heat. It squealed once on start-up, recognised the noise immediately so I ordered a replacement straight away. I also noticed a drop in the charge volts from a normal 14.5ish volts down to about 13.9. Reckoned that could also be due to the expanded belt slipping just a bit but not enough to cause another squealing session.
Following @neilly's advice, I also spent an extra 20 quid on the proper spanners to get the viscous fan off and that did make the job very much easier. I did find it easier to use a soft faced mallet (a copper face) to give the spanner a bit of a clout to shock it free, otherwise you'll be pushing and pulling till you go blue in the face. The screw fitting for the viscous fan is a normal right hand thread.
This time round I didn't replace the tensioner, it looked quite sound and did take a bit of effort to "wind it back" so that I could seat the new belt, but even if I had decided to change it, it looked like a fairly straightforward job too.
All-in-all the job was quite easy and it took longer to get the tools out and put them away afterwards than it did to actually change the drive belt.
The belt I bought was from Bearmach, online, I didn't go over to Caerphilly to get one.

It is a TD5, so you need to check what it is fitted with ?

Air con etc, as the belts have different lengths depending on vehicle spec.

Cheers

But it does tell you how to take the fan off and when you get to "*****If your just doing the V-belt, then this is as far as you need to go.*****" STOP !! :)

OK, fair enuff, ...LOL.;););), altho not sure what the difference is between a D2 and fender TD5 in what parts to remove/ are different to get at tte belt. I never have removed the intercooler hose to change the belt.

However I would recommend he downloads the Rave file as well.

Cheers
