I hate the anti rattle shims. They encourage rust to form on the caliper, under the shim. This pinches the pads so tightly, they can't retract correctly. I must admit, on my own cars, I leave the bottom one out. This gives correct brake function. They don't squeak or rattle.
It's also vitality important that the slide pins are free for correct brake operation.
Most quick fit type places that do brakes/ tyres, don't have a clue on what a brake caliper needs, other than new pads.
The anti rattle shims should be removed and the caliper lands cleaned and copper slipped. The anti squeal shims should get the same treatment. The guide pins should be removed and greased. Silicone grease is the factory grease used, however CV joint grease seems to work well too.
