I hate the anti rattle shims. They encourage rust to form on the caliper, under the shim. This pinches the pads so tightly, they can't retract correctly. I must admit, on my own cars, I leave the bottom one out. This gives correct brake function. They don't squeak or rattle.
It's also vitality important that the slide pins are free for correct brake operation.
Most quick fit type places that do brakes/ tyres, don't have a clue on what a brake caliper needs, other than new pads.
The anti rattle shims should be removed and the caliper lands cleaned and copper slipped. The anti squeal shims should get the same treatment. The guide pins should be removed and greased. Silicone grease is the factory grease used, however CV joint grease seems to work well too.

had the same thing last year on my freelander.
Garage said the pads where fitted the wrong way round ? i didnt no there was a right way or not so told him to replace with new pads seems to have worked as no more noise.

Been back to KF (daren't say the word on here), they've cleaned and refitted them. Have heard a bit of noise so far but am going to wait and see if they settle. But on the plus side, had a bit of a moan and so managed to get a complimentary Air-Con Service out of them. So got lovely ice cool air now, just ready for a long trip to Cornwall this weekend :5bsifone:

Just over three weeks later..... brakes are squeeling like crazy, intermittent noise from far side front (which think is caliper sticking) and air-con back to blowing warm air! :flame:

So booked back into KF again Monday for whole day, so they can take the entire brake system apart. Driving me mad, especially with the current heat wave as means have to have windows down and sun roof up - making the noise even louder! Any advice (other than not going to KF in the first place) that I can tell them check/do would be appreciated. Such as the actual LR specs maybe, for replacing front brake pads and disks, so I can make sure they follow it?
