bummer

be good to see a pic of that fork, looking at the schematic you posted earlier, d2 fork looks very similar to series fork, a gurt lump of cast.

interested to see how that broke!

I know. I would have told them where to go at that price. They are a reasonably small garage in the village that are known for being expensive at the best of times.

Unfortunately its the closest garage to her parents and a woman that knows very little about vehicle mechanics and is stuck 100 miles from home is an easy buck.

I told her to definitely get the U/S fork back as i still don't 100% believe it was at fault.

It was in yesterday and I can't get hold of the missus yet today to see if its working now.

And the saga continues......

Apparently garage have got the box off and surprise surprise, the fork is fine.

They have now told the wife that the plastic (WTF??) release bearing has melted and that means they have to change the clutch (EVEN MORE WTF!!).

They are obviously taking the wife for a ride because shes a woman in trouble that doesn't know what they are saying.

thoroughly ****ed off as I now have to use my 30mins a week phone allowance (for talking to my kids) to ring them and sort this **** out!! :mad2:

I think the release bearing has a plastic rear housing. I have heard of Britpart ones melting and falling apart before. If that is the case, I cant see why the complete clutch needs to be changed (unless it is old anyway). Has it been changed recently? Ensure the "new" one isnt the same make.

I've spoke to the garage on the phone and got everything from the horses mouth.

It is indeed the plastic back of the release bearing that has melted meaning it no longer engages with the fingers on the pressure plate. Whether it was a Brit-part item or not I don't know.

The clutch was the old story of "while i'm there". Apparently it has life left in it but not loads so I have agreed for him to change it but with a Sachs one supplied by me.

Good news is that the DMF is fine and looks like it was replaced with the clutch last time the box was out.

After some bartering with the labour the final price works out at £559 (including clutch) which is a bit easier to swallow knowing its not just a £23 fork being changed.

The Disco is on 175,000 miles now and touch wood should be good for plenty more after this.

Been following this, and best wishes for you and family. Have your doris keep her foot off the clutch pedal unless shifting. Fastest way to kill the throw out bearing is just touching the clutch pedal with your foot, dosen't take much pressure from the foot

GUYS

HOLD UP

PLASTIC RELEASE BEARING IS FITTED TO BASICALLY ALL LAND ROVERS IT IS OEM PART

IT USUALLY FAILS FROM COMPETITION AND IT PITA

IT RARELY FAILS DURING ROAD USE EXCEPT IF SOMEONE IS RIDING THE CLUTCH!

Anyway, apologies for capitals but I have important information to share.

As it happens, these have JUST been made by Nigel at MS and are selling like hot cakes to the competition boys:

Megasquirt for V8 engines - Off-road products

(Scroll down about half way to billet release bearing)

Anyway the workshop boys are not having you on...
