fitted my new road springs today, got them the right way round but it still saggs on the drivers side and the rear axle looks to be twisted slightly, any suggestions?

Exactly the same thing here. I got them from John Craddock (standard SWB rears) and fitted them a week ago. I had to cut off some of the bolts and replace both bushes in the rear spring hangers - bastard of a job. I'm going to ring them up and see what they say. It's weird because the driver's side spring had an inch more camber so it should sit higher. I suppose the fact that the driver and fuel tank are on the same side doesn't help. The ride is much improved though.

weird, the bushes on the chassis are brand new, how did you axle sit on the rear mine seems to be nearer the passenger side? any help would be welcome

Yep, it's sagging on the driver's side rear like yours. Do you mean that your rear wheels are not steering straight ahead? I don't have that problem. If so then the axle may not be properly located on the dowel bolted to the spring. Undo all the U-bolts and make sure it is located properly.

Yes, mine were - well one of them had Britpart stencilled on it, the other didn't and seems to be of a slightly different construction. I wasn't impressed that the axle locating dowels are a smaller diameter than they should be either.

yeah mine were britpart aswell but i measured them and they seem pretty accurate, no the dowls are in place, just cant work it out.

a mate of mine replaced his springs for bermach parabolics and when he had fitted all 4 springs it was leanong over to the right he got a replacement spring and all is ok

graham.

not a good idea to fit springs of differing makes, you'll get very odd handling as the rates are sure to be different

usually if the locating pegs arent lined up and "docked" you wont be able to the nuts on the u bolt as there are right the right length so a lean in the wrong direction is normally due to fitting the wrong spring on the wrong corner

other than buying a new set of paras (not from britpart) i'd keep an eye open for a set of good used orginals - these are a millions miles away from any of the pattern replacements in terms of ride and quality

Come on Sean give me some credit! You know how much I love looking up part numbers;) I have got the springs the right way around. I just ordered the springs and that's how they were. I'll give Craddocks a ring on Monday and see what they suggest.

With reference to docking the axle on the dowel - One of my axle spring brackets was hollowed out so it would have been possible to do up the U-bolts with it missaligned ('cos I nearly did just that). I've found in the past that 2nd hand progressive leaf springs off a LWB 2A station wagon are brilliant on a SWB. I didn't go for parabolics because of the advice I'd read on here and because I'm tight!

i wuz just making a general point, didnt think for one minute that you'd got the wrong part number

i agree about the LWB springs and the paras :)

I was thinking that it would make more sense if the fuel tank was on the nearside - that would help with the problem. I asked a mate of mine on the CB yesterday when we were driving out for some greenlaning if it was leaning to the right - he said "Yeah... Are you surprised it's leaning over with you sat in it?"
