Hi all

I've just finished spraying my 110 Defender Matt Black with cans (yeah, I know now don't I!!).

It looks mainly great, except for slight blotching on the larger panels due to the use of cans, but I'm not worried about that. What I am worried about is the durability of the paint - it seems to scratch very easily! :-(

Does anyone know if the paint will take time to harden up, or is it gonna stay like this? Just worried that first time down a narrow lane and a bush rubs down the side I'm gonna lose half my paint job!

I treated all rusty areas, keyed all surfaces, sprayed two coats of primer and then two coats of matt black.

The only topcoat I know of is laquer, but that ain't gonna work on Matt is it?? Defeats the whole point of matt black?

I've got a compressor, so perhaps the best route would be to now go over it again with gloss black and laquer?

Any thoughts anyone? I need a good surface as I'm going to be having it signwritten - my signwriter says the vinyl won't have any problems sticking to the matt, but if it starts chipping and scratching then I'll have to respray and re-signwrite too often!

I used to paint years ago, and have recently started back up again, but what a difference in the paint products and they are changing as we speak from solvent to water based.

Spray cans are crap, it's mostly thinners in them and therefore it's gona be a very thin coat.

You can still get two pack which is a base coat and a laquer afterwords, only problem is as I found out is that, the base dries fine but the laquer has an activator in it and the flies love it and it takes too long to dry. By the time mine dried in a garage it was covered in flies and dust. It's also very unhealthy and you need to use an air fed mask. I used a carbon filter one and it seems short term it limits contact with the crap in the paint.

I have now bought one coat acryic, same as the last but no clear to put on and no **** in it to kill me, it's a hard paint and gives a great finish.

My compressor is a 50 ltre and copes well, however the gun that came with it was ****, but a decent one only costs about 60 quid, 2ltrs acrylic cost me 43 quid and a gallon thinners about 12 you mix it 50-50. The gun needs a pressure of about 40 psi which is easy on most compressors, I had to hold back a few times though to let it catch up.

Test an area first before you start, I had been touching up chips etc on mine with paint from halfords, but it reacted with the paint when I sprayed it and I had to take it back to the metal. If the entire vehicle reacts you can get a sealer to spray on first.

some guy on here rollered his with good quality paint, do a search, I was going to spray the bad bits on mine but I think I will attack it with a roller, A, I can't get it in the garage, and B, it's always getting dinged, and driven through trees, so a good job is a waste of money. Matt green I think!!

Hmmmm....thanks for the info - seriously considering respraying with the compressor and using acrylics like you suggest.

Do you think I'll need to treat the existing matt black? It's Halfords own brand car spray paint - the ones in the grey tins.

How far did the 2ltrs of acrylic go? Approx how much would I need to cover the landy 110 LWB completely? Just trying to work out costings on top of the £100 or so I've already spent on the matt.

Thanks!

Try a bit and see if it reacts first, mines reacted with acid 8 primer, it boiled up so I knew not to waste the colour.

2 litres makes 4 thinned down, a lot of paint, and would be surprised if it didn't give you two coats.

I only bought 2 litres this time because it's going off the market in preference for the water based stuff, and I dont know if I can spray that. So I will have 1 litre left for the next time. I have a merc sports and wont be replacing it, so if it needs painted again I will have paint.

I used to use 2 litres for a family sized car, and thats two good coats.

Just had a chat with a guy who runs a small spray shop and he can do a final coat over what I've already done with 2-part satin black for just £150 inc. masking which I thought was a good price.

Once I've bought the paint and a decent spray gun for my compressor I'd be looking at nearly that cost anyway!

Thanks for your help on this anyway.

Fook spraying it! If your gunna hand paint then get yourself a tin of military camo matt black. Then just roller it on! It goes on a treat, covers in 1 coat and takes no time at all. No need to treat or primer or any of that ****e!
I think if your gunna go for matt then it is going to get scratched over the year. But rollering on is easy as fook so you just give her another coat next year!

dont pay someone else to do it . !!! order some military matt black and spray it on neat with a degresing gun. it loooks ok and its cheap thats how i did a freinds ex mil 90

and theres always the good old brush . if your carefull it looks ok . when i bought a s3 exmill 109 i brushed on the whole lot . someone told me it wouldnt take cos the simple bastard before me had painted it with hamerite. but it worked a treat . you can do two long wheelbases on a gallon of paint and then just re do them when they get rough.

My disco is nigaro grey, and although I was going to touch it up I keep fookin it in the bushes so it's a waste of time. Have you seen a disco done in matt, and whats the best colour.

Do you have to key it and how long to dry.

Once you have the gun you can do it again and again. The price is ok my son got a quote for doing the plastics, wheel arches front and rear bumper sills, 400 quid and a grand. I did it for 43 quid. and plenty paint left for touch up.

Take a dander down and see what his finished product is like on another vehicle first. I dont give my cash to anybody do it yerself everytime, and if I can make something then thats the way I go as well.

I've gotta get it signwritten as I'm gonna be using it as my company vehicle so the finish needs to be suitable for that, also once it's signwritten I can't really respray for a few years otherwise it'll cost a fortune in vinyl and labour!

Saw some vehicles at the shop in various stages and they looked fine to me, but then I'm no expert! The way I'm looking at it is he'll be able to do a better job than me, and as I said earlier once I've bought a decent gun and the paint I might as well cough up the small difference and have someone else sweat over it.

but you can use a gun again and youll have paint to touch it up with . and also whats stopin you paint around the vinyls
