I treated all rusty areas, keyed all surfaces, sprayed two coats of primer and then two coats of matt black.
The only topcoat I know of is laquer, but that ain't gonna work on Matt is it?? Defeats the whole point of matt black?
I've got a compressor, so perhaps the best route would be to now go over it again with gloss black and laquer?
Any thoughts anyone? I need a good surface as I'm going to be having it signwritten - my signwriter says the vinyl won't have any problems sticking to the matt, but if it starts chipping and scratching then I'll have to respray and re-signwrite too often!
I used to paint years ago, and have recently started back up again, but what a difference in the paint products and they are changing as we speak from solvent to water based.
Spray cans are crap, it's mostly thinners in them and therefore it's gona be a very thin coat.
You can still get two pack which is a base coat and a laquer afterwords, only problem is as I found out is that, the base dries fine but the laquer has an activator in it and the flies love it and it takes too long to dry. By the time mine dried in a garage it was covered in flies and dust. It's also very unhealthy and you need to use an air fed mask. I used a carbon filter one and it seems short term it limits contact with the crap in the paint.
I have now bought one coat acryic, same as the last but no clear to put on and no **** in it to kill me, it's a hard paint and gives a great finish.
My compressor is a 50 ltre and copes well, however the gun that came with it was ****, but a decent one only costs about 60 quid, 2ltrs acrylic cost me 43 quid and a gallon thinners about 12 you mix it 50-50. The gun needs a pressure of about 40 psi which is easy on most compressors, I had to hold back a few times though to let it catch up.
Test an area first before you start, I had been touching up chips etc on mine with paint from halfords, but it reacted with the paint when I sprayed it and I had to take it back to the metal. If the entire vehicle reacts you can get a sealer to spray on first.
some guy on here rollered his with good quality paint, do a search, I was going to spray the bad bits on mine but I think I will attack it with a roller, A, I can't get it in the garage, and B, it's always getting dinged, and driven through trees, so a good job is a waste of money. Matt green I think!!
