hi hope someone can help

i have a freelander 1, 2002, 1.8 petrol.

The engine ticks over fine and when stationary revs fine, however when driving when i accelerate hard it splutters, if i put my foot down slightly its ok unless going up hill. when spluttering i have to ease off the pedal until it picks up. i have changed fuel pump which didnt help, checked spark plugs and looked at injectors but dont know how to test, i do get a slight smell of petrol when spluttering.

This got worse when somebody suggested putting an engine flush product in the petrol which made it worse!!

Would be grateful for any advice

thanks

nick

Engine cleaner in the petrol!!:eek::eek:

Misfiring is either sparks or a fuel problem. What codes is it coming up with?

dont think i can get codes as its been to the local mechanics and apparently its not connected as i have a replacement engine

If it's missing then the ECU will store a relevant code.

So I'm assuming the original engine didn't misfire, but the replacement does?

when i bought the car it already had the replacement engine, it was fine no issues, after a while the car when you put your foot down would drive ok then suddenly pick up speed / power as if it was starved of petrol and then the pump kicked in, so stupidly took someones advice of the fuel cleaner which made it 100 times worse!

A replacement engine won’t affect the ability to read faults from the engine ecu

Need to get fault codes read and live data analysed so you can understand what’s going on

just to let you know, very embarassingly it was a spark plug!!! now this was the first thing i checked but could see no damage, however when i changed them today one was split up the side, all ok now, thanks anyway
