Have asked about this problem elsewhere but gotten nowhere, included a video too to help explain my problem.

My speedo has the usual Land Rover jerkyness, but once it reaches about 31mph, it stops. The car is obviously going faster than that but the speedo remains there until I slow down under 31. Is this a speedo cable or a speedo problem? I've fiddled with the cable in the back of the speedo already.

Try driving down a motorway way behind a HGV as they will be doing about 56mph (or use a GPS). At 60 Mph your trip meter should increment by 1 mile every minute. If it does then it means that it is getting the correct input from the cable and it will be an internal speedo fault. If it takes two minutes to register 1 mile then your cable could be slipping (or it could still be a speedo fault).

I know it sounds obvious but I have to ask as it looks like the speedo glass has a whole in and a crack.

Is the needle fouling on something not allowing it to move further.

Even if it isn't is it not worth swapping the speedo out as that hole in it is an mot fail.

Hmm, need to try that trick next time I'm on the motorway, thanks Kwakerman.

Although if it is a speedo problem, I'm gonna wait until I sort more pressing matters out. £160 for a speedo seems bloody ridiculous to me.

Ooh thanks dude, will keep an eye on those! First one has a clock too, been meaning to get one for a while..

Coming home from work about an hour ago, the trip seems to rotate an awful lot faster than if I'm actually doing 30mph. So I'm 99% sure the cable is fine, the speedo is just being stubborn. May try and open it up and fiddle with the needle.
