Speedo cable - which end.

The speedo stopped working, so I got a new cable. It worked for a few weeks and has now stopped again. The gearbox end of the cable which started life as a square section now looks a bit mangled, whilst I wonder if there is too much resistance in the speedo itself.

So which end should I start at and can I pass the MOT without it?

The speedo itself should present hardly any friction, gently turn the input on the speedo with a jewellers 'driver should be dead easy.
The box end is a friction drive, you can remove the drive unit and inspect it.
Some reccomend fitting a lhd speedo cable as they are a little longer and easier to get in, stick a bit of ep2 around the new cable to aid with friction.
The speedo not working is an mot failure, allthough I've had vehicles pass as they dont allways check it, if they do it'll deffo fail.

If you are required to have a speedo to pass an MOT i wonder if you can stick a Sat Nav in for the purpose of the MOT? Its a speedo and its more accurate than an analogue one which bounces between 20 and 50 while doing 30mph

It may well be more acurate but the whole point of having a "speedo" for yr M.O.T. isn't just so you know how fast your going but so that it records your mileage too. :doh:

Splitting hairs now, but your not sposed to look at anything whilst driving 'cept the proper equipment and controls, ruling out the shat nav.
Turning the volume down on the car radio is an offence honest.
I was nearly taken to court after I admitted to a copper that I dont check my brake fluid every time I go somewhere, ok I'd just had an accident where mi brakes didnt work but even so.

I heard something a while back where someone had been screwed for closing their eyes whilst driving nearly causing a collision.
Turned out the girl was sneezing, and only when it was proven that evolution has prgrammed us with an instinct to close our eyes whilst sneezing to stop our eyeballs from dropping out was the case dropped.
Royal waste of time and tax payers dough.

You do not need a speedo for the MoT, although if you are trying to get a blown bulb past the tester on the grounds that you keep the vehicle perfectly maintained, then no speedo isn't going to impress him.
As for recording the mileage, that is all they have to do, there is no requirement for it to be different to last year.

Looking at the past MOT certificates that came with my landy they show the same mileage for about 5 years

. If it had been a requirement then it would (should) have been picked up.
