I have that conviction!!

Replaced the engine in an allegro (Long time ago) and crushed the cable. On
the way home from the garage I had an incident which resulted in the car
being hauled off by the fine officers of the constabulary for an engineers
check.

Defective speedo & defective horn £45 fine, and no endorsement (before
points)

Incidently, I was 21 when I had that allegro, and one day I was stopped 5
times on a 75 mile journey because I was under 60........... Years old!
Obviously I must have nicked it! Sadly I did actually own it.

They reduced the speed limit on the A12 north of the Blackwall tunnel.
Until a few months ago it was 50 mph, then it was reduced to 40 mph and
extra speed cameras appeared.

This may amuse - a letter in the Times (UK) on 15 December in the "debate"
section. The question posed was whether people would be prepared to have a
speed limiter fitted if it meant cheaper insurance. Among the replies was:

Regime change

I HAVE a "speed limiter" on my small and economical car in the shape of a
Greenspeed bumper sticker. This cheap device encourages me to drive at 55mph
between urban areas and at 20mph within them. This is not in order to stay
within speed limits, but to explain to the driver behind that I am trying to
save petrol, reduce emission, minimise accidents and the danger posed to
other road users, reduce congestion, allow overtaking by buses on trunk
roads and motorways and reduce noise and wear and tear on car, tyres and
driver.

Mechanical speed limiters may avoid fines and please insurers but the
environmental impact of the car needs to be reduced in many other ways that
can only be achieved by speeds lower than the current national speed limits.
Insurers should be pressing for the regime change to 55/20mph, not only to
reduce accidents but to reduce the effects of climate change associated with
CO² emissions.

It's not that he wants to drive slowly and save the planet - good luck to
him - but that he has to tell us all in such detail why he is so much better
than everyone else. The only surprise is that this was in the Times and not
the Guardian.

Also noticed how the war is hotting up in the States:

However in the meantime you are travelling at a speed dangerous to the public.
Please don't do it!
