I`ve had my Defender 2.5tdi (p-reg) for a while now & always assumed they weren`t built for speed, until the other day!
I was on my way to work, sauntering along the M6 near Preston when another Defender came hurtling past me (giving me a wave)
This got me a-thinking:-

1...Why doesn`t my defender go as fast as that one?
2...What speed should i be able to get outa my Landy?

Can anybody enlighten me on what speeds i should expect from a defender? Am i going wrong somewhere?

many thanks ;0)

(btw...i was doing about 60 at the time)

did he have a v8 badge on the back panel?
or was he going so fast, past you, that you never got the chance to see it?

and if you were doing just 60 and i passed you on in a micra doing 80, then you might be thinking, wtf has he got under that bonnet.

Figures for a TDi quote 80mph, but there are sh**loads of aftermarket goodies to make them go faster like intercoolers etc, check out twisted performance and Jeremy Fearn.;)

May have a Disco transfer box fitted to up the gearing. That is the easiest upgrade for more speed, or even larger tyres 235/85 x 16's.

Hi All,

I went from a REALLY fast car to my TD5 90 and was expecting it to be really slow, but it isn't that bad at all.
I have bowled along on the motorway at an indicated 90 (bananas that is officer ;) ), its a bit loud but no problem at all.
I have 235 tyres, the EGR blanked off and a K&N filter, and thats all.

Wouldn't mind having it chipped, but bit scared of that!!!

Jason.

doing a 100mph in a deepender with AT tyres eh? now that would be fun.
or suicidal.

I put 235/85/16s on mine as soon as i bought it........made a lot of difference, not bothered about top speed as i need the power low down to pull my c/van.

LOL! :0)
Sorry, i didn`t see if it had a V8 badge on...think i was too much in shock!
Seriously though, i can probably get 65mph tops when on the motorway. Do you think this is underperforming? Going up hill on the m/way can be a real grind, as i can feel the car slowing to nearer 50mph. I honestly don`t know if this is natural for a defender300 or something is wrong (ie...turbo not working proper etc...)

(btw...can you tell i know sod all about engines? lol!)

Yeah, that sounds slow to me. Mines a 91 200Tdi 90 & does the book speed of around 80 fairly easily with a bit of a run up. It'll sit @ 70/75 all day on the motorway, uphill or into a headwind.

P reg? 300 Tdi ain't it? I'd say you've got a problem, haven't a clue what mind. Bet someone on here has though.........any other symptoms? Smokey? Burning oil? Generally sluggish pulling away? Any knocks, bangs, clunks or whirrs? Difficult to start?

you def got a problem there mate. it should cruise at 70 all day long.
and should do at least 80, before your nerve fails you.

My knackered old 200Tdi will still drag me along at between 70-80 on the motorway, maybe worth having a check of a few things.

If you were only doing 60, then pretty much any other 200Tdi (onwards) Landy could have done you.

Some TD5's are getting a bit quick now- chipped, lowered, full length intercoolers, slick tyres. Lots of cash though.

Yep my 1997, 110 300tdi quite enjoys driving around 75 mph on the motorway etc..( 120 km for me ) it is smooth and does not sound strained at all. However, I know these cars were not really made for motorway cruising so I normally take it down to around 100 -110 km ( 65 mph ) and try to stay around that area ( although it does like to creep up without me really noticing it ).

It is surprisingly quick off the mark too for such a beast ! ( I actually think its a little quicker than my 1994, 90 300tdi !

I dont have any extras on it , its just bog standard.

Even me daughters 90TD will keep at 65mph on the M6 going up Shap, You must have something amiss somewhere.
