Yet another update......
Had my defender in the garage yesterday for a full service & MOT. One or two little problems, but when i picked it up the mechanic said i should feel a difference in it`s performance.....JEEZUS!! i hit the M65 & did 75-80mph for it`s entire length! Hills & everything!!
I am now back in love with my defender ;0)

Can i thank everybody who gave me advice on this thread ;0) without your help i`d still be lumbering along at 50-odd mph thinking it was normal for a defender. lol!

It's far too slow!

If it's a diesel, and it isn't making nasty smoke, then just about the only reason for it going too slow is NOT ENOUGH FUEL being injected.

First, make totally certain that when you deck the gas pedal, the lever on the injection pump goes all the way over to the stop! Maybe it's got a slack cable, and getting only part throttle!

Stage one - take it out for a drive with a chum following behind (two way radios are useful - £30 a pair from Maplins etc) and on a suitable bit of road at some agreed signal, you deck the throttle at about 40 mph in 5th gear, and keep it decked.

Yes or no, apart from maybe a puff at the start, does it trail dirty looking smoke?

If not -
Stage two - replace the fuel filter, and check the lift pump for pressure and volume of delivery. If the lift pump is on the way out, or a pipe is kinked, or pick-up in tank choked, or filter gunged, it will restrict the fuel supply, and hence the output power. Temorarily remove the air filter element - these can look OK, but restrict the airflow drastically. In a turbo engine this may NOT cause smoke, but will reduce absolute manifold pressure, and the injection pump will not deliver the full amount of fuel, and the power drops.

If this doesn't help, you may need to worry about the injection pump needing a clean-out, but first you must make sure that HEAPS of fuel gets delivered right to the injection pump.

If on a road test it's horribly smoky, the engine needs attention, and that's another story. Try the easy things first.

Out of Curiosity how much did you pay for your full service & MOT

I got quoted £175 for a straight full service & MOT, but i know some things needed doing for it to pass. I ended up paying £295 in all.
Don`t know if this is good or bad?

Roys old 90 was a real beast. It had a few mods, jeremy j fearn intercooler, vortex exhaust (severly reduces emissions allowing the pump to be tweeked more) k&N filter, hyclones, EGR blocked etc. when he was working in germany he had it showing 105 on the gps!! i towed a 24ft caravan over Bluberhouses last year it never dropped below 60 even on the big inclines. definatly the most impressive 90 i've ever driven! payed the price at the fuel pump though!:D

I have booth a disco transfer and large tyres the clock says i am doing about 80 but my gps says 85.

but to save fuel it cruises quite nicely ! at 70
