Special tool 600300

Hi,

I am replacing the nut on the rear of the main shaft.

I need to make my self a Land Rover Special Tool 600300

I have heared that you can use a 32mm deep socket and cut it into shape using an angry grinder.

My only question is that the special nut measures 35mm accross, so wouldnt I need a 35mm socket?

Your thoughts?

are yer not better getting a socket the size of the internal of the spurs and weling a set if pins ( cut off 4" nails ) to it ?

What I want to know is what socket size do I need?

32mm or 35mm?

Below is what I have found but im not sure to go with the 32mm socket as I dont think the nut will fit inside as per my first post?

"Special tool 600300. You need this to work with the nut on the end of the gearbox mainshaft which holds the transfer box input gear on. I don't know anyone who's actually seen a real one of these, including my local Land Rover franchised dealer, but you can make something that works rather well by attacking a 32mm deep socket with an angle grinder."

cant yer just take it with yer to a shop that sells spanners and sockets and try it in the end before yer buy one?

Well... unless your tape measure is broken i would say you need a 35mm socket. What use would a 32mm socket be - it clearly won't fit the 'special' nut...

32mm is what I picked up when searching DIY 600300 Special Land Rover Tool in Google..

But I think 35mm, I just thought I would ask on here in case any one had made one.

A 35mm deep socket is quite a price... specially if im going to attack it with the angry grinder.

It seems a bit of a waste to go gutting up a socket. If you have a welder, what about finding a piece of pipe of the correct diameter and cut slots into that, then weld a big nut onto the other end. Not a nice way to do it, but I'd guess that many people use a hammer and chisel on that nut.
