Rear diff drive nut removal

I need to swap the oil seal in the rear diff input shaft.
I’ve chocked all the wheels, and got a 32mm socket and breaker on the nut, but it’s not moving.
Is it left handed or something, or just blooming tight? I don’t have a decent sized ugga-dugga sadly.

A flange lock bar is a very useful tool when undoing these and t box nuts.

I made my own , as it can also be used to torque it back up.

Normal RH thread, tight (130NM ish) - check this as this is the preload on the bearing and there are some differences ...

Yes, the spacer and the flange provide the bearing preload which is why its important to get the torque right when putting it back. To tight and you nack the bearing faces, to loose and you nack the bearing... be really carefull in keeping everything clean during reassembly too.

Hmm new oil seal arrived but did I order the wrong one? My diff housing has a metal shield on the front - is this part of the seal, or does it just pop off?
Think I’m missing something here.

That metal shield is the mud shield, there are 2 types - an external type and the one you have pictured which is internal, they usually stay attached to the flange though. it should just pull out

Thanks for those. Most helpful. I think I may have an Ashcroft rear axle looking at some more pictures. It’s not a castle nut on the pinion.
How do I determine what the axle is?

Its probably just a later defender axle. Earlier ones were castle nuts and later ones nyloc nuts instead, disco ones had a bolt instead I think. Doesn’t matter what fixing it has, the seal replacement is the same principle

dunno, need a photo to confirm, maybe although I don’t know about the flanges on them, something is vaguely in my head that they are different but I can’t quite remember

Here’s the axle. Could it be a Salisbury?
It’s a 1987 110

good thing. It’s much stronger than a normal rover diff
