I've got an 01 4.6 V8 P38 running on LPG that is due a set of sprak plugs.

Does anyone have any recomendations for a particular plug ?

Or any decent on line retailers ?

its a very very large mine field, some reckon just originals some say lpg specific, personally i use the cheapest and change em often. i get for for free from unle, he pays around 28p or 18p cant remember.

lpg needs a longer burning spark to get it to fire at its best. petrol however doesnt.

do a google search and theres also lpg forum. you'll get some better advice on there i reckon

I've read some infr on the LPG forums and there does seem to be a NGK LPG specific plug for the earlier engines but I can't see one for the later V8s.

I am all for swapping them regularly if using cheaper plugs as thats what i do in my track day car.

Bog standard are fine on the P38s. On the older ones it may make a difference but the later ignition systems are much improved so fancy plugs are not needed.

The later ignition system (Bosch) on the Thor engine has different plugs than that for Gems engine. The std replacement interval is 70k miles and they cost about £120 as set compared with about £35 a set for Gems.

Replacing them more often can get bloody expensive but I'm in the same boat. Have a Thor engine on gas and need plugs soon. Can't say I've ever seen an alternative plug offered for Thor with gas and will therfore put std in.

Be VERY careful taking them out, often they drag the threads out with them where they have never been removed so are carboned or rusted in place.
NGK BPR6ES is all you need, straight out of the box. The lower voltage required because of the smaller gap than the Platinum plug has will give the leads an easier life. Change them every 15-20 k and all will be well.

for plugs that are carboned up inside, carefully turn em back and forth, dont try to wind em straight out, this should break the carbon off better.

also try to apply turning force on a t bar rather than a ratchet where the force can cock the plug socket over and make it difficult!

a tiny bit of copper slip on the new plugs will help run em back in easier too!

Hope thats general advice Gav - not directed at me.....

twas general and it would be silly to direct it at a mechanic now wouldnt it! that'd be like you telling me how to make chrome!!!

it works for me and is just a general thing i do without thinking, but if the plugs come out easy, as mine now do, then its not needed!!!:doh::doh:

Just resurecting this thread, finally got round to pickking up some Magnecour leads the other day and going to hopefully fit them at the weekend and would like to swap the plugs at the same time.

After talking to teh technical department at NGK they ahve sugegsted using BKR6EIX-11 rather than the standrad platinum NGK plug PFR6N-11 for a Thor V8, has anyone here run BKR6EIX-11 in a Thor running LPG ?

Cheers,
Jamie.
