Wrong...changing tyre size affects mileage and speed so you have to alter recording methods...using gps is not the option as doesnt change vehicles original equipment...is a non working speedo an mot fail?...a gps reading on a rolling road is non functional...tyre size affects rolling radius which affects speedo reading does it not?...
I don’t believe an MoT checks for a working speedo. And certainly does not check for the accuracy of any speedo.

maybe you’d like to pick your toys up and pop them back in the pram now ;)

Which as we don’t live in a Nazi state is no problem at all ;)
Yeah, the perfect attitude right up to the point you wonder what's in the green envelope (i did) and upon opening find enclosed an invitation to (if you're lucky) attend a speed awareness course near you and details of where to send the cheque...:(

It isn't an MOT requirement, just a means of retaining your driving licence...

I would expect an mot inspector to check the speedo if the mileage was the same as last years certificate...but hey ho what do I know here in Portugal the inspection is tuff speedo not showing on rolling road then road test with meter in the vehicle...wrong size factory tyres fail...brakes fail on inspection 4wks to sort not allowed to carry passengers...but it's a backward safety concieous country regarding vehicle road worthiness!...

Sorry to hear that. But that just sounds like speeding. A speedo that shows a slightly different speed to a standard vehicle is not really the same thing. And many speedos over read anyhow. You may find it is more accurate on bigger tyres.

It is an mot requirement to have a working speedo anything pertaining to the workings of the vehicle must work except non safety items...it appears some overlook it...remember if the inspector is unsure about anything it's fail...not tested...a bit like egr debate not being able to remove covers...

The odometer (shows mileage) is not the same thing as a speedo. The odo reading is noted for an MoT but that is all.

let’s face it. If your speedo breaks (which normally houses the odometer). You may have to replace it with another. If they don’t make them anymore. You’d have to fit a used one.

Bollocks...

This is completely wrong. An MoT in the UK checks for specific items. Not everything has to work.

Section 7.8 is for the speedo.

Just checked an MOT check sheet and Class 5 vehicles DO have their speedo checked.
I'm guessing that a Class 5 is bigger than a normal PLG car as i've NEVER had my speedo checked for working let alone accuracy since 1982 when i started driving.

Don't forget that the 'speedo' measures speed and the odometer measure distance travelled. In the past i've had a speedo cable break which renders both inoperable but have also had the speedo gubbins inside go twang so i had no 'speed' but still measured distance. The two functions don't always have the same source of drive.

But the oversized tyre size does which was my original point affects both speed and distance covered...

If you carry a spare it should be the same size and rating as the other tyres. If you don't carry one at all, that's fine

so how does space savers work then...my Seciento has a skinny tyre spare my Smart fortwo has no spare but a kit and compresser as standard...
