Has anyone fitted a spare wheel to the front of a defender? being an old fella, do not ant to be putting wheel on the roof rack.
Travelling to SA and beyond so want to take two spares. Also have step type toe vbar on rear , who makes a tow bar to fit??

you need the bonnet mounted spare wheel carrier. keep an eye on ebay as its best to replace the whole bonnet. also look into swingaway wheel carriers for the rear door. this way you can spread the weight and take 2 spares.

personally id opt to learn how to repair punctures and buy the kit and levers. then take 1 spare. this method cuts down on alot of weight too. make sure you take steel rims as these can be straightened whilst alloys will crack.

In view of where you want to go you dont want a spare wheel in front of the cooling system. On bonnet, and back door are the tried and tested way, if you arent up to lifting it on to the roof rack then get a small swingaway derrick mounted on the side of the roof rack and load it with that. If you think that might be a solution I can give you more info.on a design HTSH one spare not a good idea. :)

thank you for positive solution, I live in west africa for 10 years and saw many vehicles with front wheel carriers, military land rovers as well.

Hi, here is quick sketch of one that I made for old guy in OZ (84 and still going bush camping in his L/cr%$r)
HTSH) sorry no Picasso

There is no prob bringing just one spare. We did it to cape town with just one and a set to tyre mending equipment. However the reality is that there are puncture repair places everywhere and if you've wrecked a tyre beyond repair they do have tyre shops to buy replacments.
As for mounting in the front I would say it is a great idea - just make sure the mounting is very strong so that you can use it to bump start other vehicles. The downside is you probably won't be able to fit a winch - rarely used except in rainy season in west africa. Do fit extra Fans/bigger Rad etc as we didn't and had cooling problem in the 50degC sand. Not necessary but will slow you down if you don't
