I noticed a few people reccomending somebody in Doncaster but was wondering if there was any one closer to Rotherham or even Sheffield?

I know a great garage but I'm wanting the parts of the drive train serviced and heard horror stories of normal mechanics messing them up.

I know I want my auto box (Jatco) transmission fluid replaced and the diff box fluid. Whats this IRD I keep hearing off? Is it essential that it's replaced/serviced or does it tend to be ok if the rest is ok?

I can do the engine myself but not very up on 4x4 drive trains or able to get under the car properly.

The IRD is essentially the 4WD transfer box on the Freelander. The drive out the gearbox is transfered to the wheels through it. It's important to change its oil just like anything else. It's not a difficult job to do.

if you have a go yourself, remember to undo the filler plug first before you even go near the drain plug.

just saying...'cos if you drain it out and can't refill it, you're in a world of hurt.

make sure you get the right screw/bolt on the auto box, get it wrong and the box will have to come out. Hippo did some pictures, or ashcroft transmissions website shows you too.

The last I heard though, they did not have a mechanic as the last one no longer works there.

For gear box stuff, I use

they specialise in auto box diagnostic and repair.

I did use Atom Transmission in Doncaster once, but would not go back there. Had to return the car because the IRD pinion leaked after they worked on it. There fix lasted a couple of days before all of the IRD oil was dumped on the road, when re-bolting the pinion in, they stripped the threads out of the IRD casing. A local guy managed to sort that one out in the end.
