sound system in your off roader

basically, want to upgrade the sound system in my defender 90.
already replaced the speakers upfront with kenwood ones.
but want to put 2 maybe 4 6x9s in her, and also a subwoofer.
just wondering what are the best makes to go for.
and what are the best places in a 90 to put them.
have seats in the back so space for a sub box is an issue, although i could possibly sacrifice one of the seats for a sub.
anyone got any ideas?

when i used to work on the boy racer cars i used Vibe speakers with Pioneer head units. the Vibe speaker range provides alot of bass, their 6x9s are probably some of the best ive heard and their bass boxes take alot of beating for volume and quality of bass. bear in mind that the music you listen to will affect what size sub you go for - a 12" sub in a ported box will provide deep rumbling bass while a sealed 10" box wont drop as deep but is better for punchy short bass lines. a bass box will need a decent amp so plan that into your budget, along with a decent wiring kit. also bear in mind a sub works better in a sealed area like the boot of a car, so you will loose some of the bass in the open back of a landy. if you want to keep the sound stage balanced and you add alot of bass (either with 6x9s or a sub box) you will need a pretty good set of front component speakers to provide some treble, otherwise you get the effect of all the sound coming from the rear of the vehicle and it all sounds a bit deep.

the ideal way of wiring a car audio system is to have the front components and the sub box amplified, and the 6x9s running off the head unit as these would be used mainly to provide rear fill and balance to the sound instead of adding any real volume.

Vibes are good, I love my infinity reference speakers (componants and 6x9's) Just stay away from Fusion 6x9's, took three sets back after they blew (no amp just the 4x50w head unit powering them).

This is personal experiance.....I'm not a BR but i do love music and quality is more important than quantity as far as I'm concerned

I fitted a sub under the passanger seat of my series, i dunno if defenders the same for space, you shouldn't need a sub if you've got decent enough speakers, as for 6x9's buy a decent make and use a good thick speaker cable to power them.

I can understand peoples issues with stereo's but if your Landys a daily, its nice to have some decent stereo esp when sitting in traffic without the road noise of driving along!!!

I know m8 but..........

You need a stereo to drown out those noises and at least pretend everthings fine..............

Me landyus got a dodgy head unit but the 2 rear speakers are good.The four in the door are shagged from water damage
Ive got a much better set up in me other motor.Jbl 6x9 hidden under a stealth shelf for security n bass.Got a big bass box in me van.Not with having in all that space.

it is my daily driver as well, and enjoy listening to some good tunes while driving, on and off road

I don't need a radio cos I've got all the music I need comming from up front.

I made some wooden surrounds for my 6x9s and put them up in the top corners at the back, screwed through the roof on little brackets and it sounds great. Got some sony head for about £70 that i can plug iPlod into so i don't have to listen to fatbastid (face for the rodeo) moyles all the ****ing time and job's a goodun - they sound fine! They have plenty of bass which (bearing in mind yer drivin round in a tin box) sounds great.

As I only use my 90 on weekends, all it got is an "ok" eastern origin headunit with lots of bells & whistles and a pair of JBL 6x9's fitted into the centre cubby box-thats it & it does the job just fine in drowning out the rattles!
Cause its a ragtop,there is no way I'd put anything of value in it.

When you've got a V8 you don't need a stereo.

i have housemates you see, so i put some money into the LR stereo. When its finished, i plan to have 4 small speakers, 2 6x9's and 2 10" subs. And, they should be high enough to be water resistant.
