Can anyone help; I have a Freelander (Td4 53 plate, aprox 71,000 miles) and as of yesterday have developed the following fault. As soon as I increase power to go up a hill, increase speed or just put my foot down I get a sound of an air flow from the back of the engine or even behind the dash. It sounds like the heater/ventilation fan only stronger, (the fan IS turned off). All the fluid levels are ok and there are no warning lights on the dash; apart from the sound the Freelander is fine and goes well with no power loss or other symptoms. When the car is in neutral there is no sound produced despite how high I rev the engine. I've been under the vehicle and despite the protection panel cannot see an obvious problem. I would like to identify the sound in case it's the beginning of a bigger problem.

Thanks

Hi and welcome

The sound of leaking air is just that - you won't see anything when stood with the engine running because you'll only be able to detect it when the engine is under load and the turbo / intercooler system are working.

There is a rubber outlet hose attached to the turbo and two more hoses that could give you the same efect.

Check first the one that is located on the left side of engine as you stand in front of car - it rubs on the engine and causes a hole in the rubber thus leaking air. The other is a smaller wide hose on right hand side - check jubilee clips are tight. You can sometimes see if this is the guilty party by a thin film of oil sprayed out.

You should also notice that you don't get the same performance and possibly an increase in fuel consumption (cos you put your foot down and f all happens!!!)
If its none of these......check Mrs has not sneaked her hairdryer in!

Ha learned hardly!

Had the same on mine (2001 TD4) so only too happy to help. Mine was leaking on the small pipe right hand side - manifested itself when towing last summer. And thats a trailer not a caravan or horsebox or mobile platform for hairdresser convention

Although...wouldn't mind towing the blonde from my hairdressers!!!!!
