Thanks for all the replies guys - on them close ups it certainly looks as though it needs a thorough inspection...
So now to decide what to do - leave alone or pay for an inspection???
Anyone live north wales and want to earn some easy cash :)

Welcome to the forum!

I don't have a Defender, but my journey started with looking for one. Now it's a 1982 Range Rover. From my experience, and I started with zero experience working on cars, stuff like prop shafts, lights and stuff turned out to be easy enough to fix in my drive way. Rust, especially on Defenders/90/110, is a different thing. I looked at a couple and would have tried fixing, or replacing, a frame. The body so is a different story. Also, paint jobs are the cheapest and easiest way to dress a car up.

Ooops sorry which one and I’ll start a new thread
Why not just start your own build thread,? dont matter you not bought it yet, to be fair most of started with a carrier bag of rusty spanners, the wrong bumper, a spare wheel a few brake pads and some dreams! :D

PS best advice, be prepared to travel think of it as an adventure! if its solid underneath and sounds like a bus crossed with a tractor and does cause you get misty eyed and have a coughing fit from the exhaust, makes no dodgy sounds when you drive it, chances are its a gooden. If it gets to temp and does not blow up all the better! dont worry about a few tiny oil drips, from just about anywhere, thats normal and its just marking its territory, on the the other hand if it looks like its had a brown or black curry and a few beers the nightbefore and had an 'accident, run! Look the the driveway and where the sellor normally parks it, you can see if the gound has been recently de-greased. Oh yea be careful of any defender with lots of stuff in the back when you test drive, else you no hear the rattles.
