Today AFTER shifting from Drive to N I COULDN'T RETURN TO ANY GEAR, i turned off engine it wouldn't restart, it still wouldn't bugde i stripped gear lever apart it was the circlip that had fell off gear selector shaft and would not lift rod, it is tiny and fiddly i found it and fixed it, this must be a common fault so it's an easy fix if it ever happens to you.
Common fault as my spares people said "oh yes these go all the time!!!!!!!!!"

Just put this on for future referance, NOT boasting

oh dear.

I had this happen to my volvo before christmas, whilst doing a U turn in a junction when I went from D to N to R. The box went into P by default but the stick was in any other position - but it didn't make any difference. But because the stick wasn't in P, the engine wouldn't start. Ended up blocking the road until the AA came out and put the selector cable back on the pin connected to the lever after ripping out the centre console.

So now I have two cars which are prone to doing it :(

I reckon I could fix it myself next time, now I know what the problem is. But it's the last thing you need when you're trying to turn around. Especially as it's fiddly - as you say.
 
the bit is 7p i got 2 and put em in my box of LR Disco bits [getting bigger may have to buy a shogun to carry it!] worth doing JIC .
I had got into work at 0230hrs to do 16hrs it peed me off till i got it sussed.:D
