This is going to sound like a realy silly question but..........

Is my Discovery a 4x4 or an all wheel drive? I do have the 2nd lever he mentioned but thought they were permanent all wheel drive as well.

I've always considered it a 4x4

(running to hide behind sofa to avoid the expected flak)

hi fella, no flak from me! your disco is perminent (my have spelt that wrong!) front and rear wheel drive. the second leaver is to select high and low ratio and center diff lock. so as you nip to tesco the front and rear axle are driven by the prop shafts. any help? :welcome2:

Cheers Little nay. :)

So some off roaders are 2wd only and a lever then allows power to all wheels making it 4wd.

Then he recons they are better on mud? Thats the confusing bit, surely a landy with permenant 4wd wold be as good on mud?

I understand the diff lock bit (without it a wheel could loose traction, with it on then the wheels on each axle are looked together so only 2 wheels on the same axle can spin if they are on the slippery stuff, I hope thats correct) But surely a 2wd/4wd vechicle would have the same problem unless........ all 4 wheels are locked and only all 4 wheels could slip together making it less likely....

Sorry I was thinking as I typed and thought I would leave it in to see if my thinking is correct.

:)

well, when i worked for a little jap dealer who also make the hyabusa, we were taught that they were selectable 4 wheel drive but the great and mighty land rover is perminent 4 wheel drive (well actually it is front and rear wheel drive till the diff is locked). So i guess that all wheel drive is like the impretza (spelt wrong again!) but that perticular japanese skateboard doesn't have the diff lock so all wheels spin freely. but this old dird could have just got a bit muddled.

Most all wheel drives only engage 4wd when traction is lost usually by means of a viscous coupling or electrickery. So I suppose the gaylander could be described as AWD.

Proper 4wd has front and rear propshafts and some form of difflock. in LR case this is a central diff which locks the propshafts together However it is still possible to spin 1 wheel on each axle usually referred to as been "cross axled" or for all 4 wheels to spin in mud or on ice, gravel etc.

some 4x4's have front centre and rear diffs The merc G wagen been one of them.

If all 4 wheels are been driven the it must be 4 x 4 wd. the difflock only locks the propshafts so that they turn at the same speed. It doesn't stop the wheels from slipping or spinning either.
