some work on the disco , is it a reasonable price ?

just wondered if this is a good price lads ?

i have an egr blanking kit, de cat front pipe, a replacement door (rear passenger drivers side) oil,fuel,air filter , already here , but no fluids

so...

fit de cat pipe and egr kit
swap the door over
full service inc fluids,diff oil and gear oils changed
the penny trick
full flush of pas steering fluid and fill up and fix a slight issue
clean sedimentor
diagnose the cruise control fault/fix if it can be fixed easily with no parts

about £250 inc all the fluids might be less depends on time taken and any probs crop up, is that a good price ? thats at mates garage done at cheaper than usual friends price

or...how easy is that all to do for a 1st time novice ? bar the front pipe which would been a ramp

like the door ? i have the repalcement door with motors in, but no door card glass or the top section around glass

or ...anyone here can better that price in the hampshire/portsmouth area feel free to drop me a message

the top section around glass just bolts off

i think you should try the jobs your self before you send it to a garage,
i think it is satisfying doing it yourself

it is a good price from the garage tho,

you need a jack not a ramp to do the decat pipe-takes about an hour from start to finish,as long as the nuts come undone first try.You jack body up to give more clearance

is the door likley to be just bolt stuff and easy to do myself ? am i likley to have any trouble with the pins n geting it to sit and line up straight ?

also the gear and diff oil..is this difficult for a 1st timer ?

the thing is if i get hasstle like mentioned if the bolts for exhaust done come off properly and i get stuck and left with a job half done i cant complete

power steering flush out ? theres a bit of a rub/friction when i steer to the left and that needs sorting he said a flush out and check the valves is needed

i am prepared to do bits that are easy enough for myself to do to lower the price for the bits i cant or shouldnt try

My local garage charges £35.00 per hour labour, so about 7 hours if you work it out. Providing all the jobs are straight forward I would imagine...

1 hour...fit de cat pipe and egr kit
1-1.5 hours...swap the door over (can be fiddly)
1-1.5 hours...full service inc fluids,diff oil and gear oils changed
20 mins...the penny trick
30 mins...full flush of pas steering fluid and fill up and fix a slight issue
10 mins...clean sedimentor
????...diagnose the cruise control fault/fix if it can be fixed easily with no parts

if you have not already, get a manual or go through this site and do the easier things first. like oil and filter changes. if it goes smoothly, you might be more tempted to have a go at the egr and de-cat. its only nuts and bolts and confidence, which you`ll get by working on your disco.

not sure what to do yet, if it was a bit warmer or i had a work shop to do it..

however i dont want to get in a pickle and be left stuck,or have something not done properly ?

any rough idea how much it would cost for all the fluids ?

im thinking maybe tackle the door job myself 1st,and see how i go ? is that likley to be quite straight forward and no major hiccups ? how about getting it straight and lined up correctly and sitting right ? or wil it just do that anyway ?

look up comma oils and find nearest outlet to you-get there diesel lite 10w40 semi synthetic-you need 7lts,so 2 x 5lts (spare for top up or use towards next change),or 1 x 5lts +2 x 1lts.They should also have the 80/90 gear oil you need for diffs and transfer box-for the gearbox it should be mtf,but i used castrol smx(synthetic manual transmission fluid)from halfrauds cos I could not find mtf local.The service is easy for you to do-just make sure you get the fill plugs undone first on the diffs ,transfer and gearbox,BEFORE you let the old stuff out

so the diff and gear oil is easy to do ? can i just lay under the car n do it ? ie no ramp etc

ive done oil changes, coolant flushes and servicing on my bmw, but ive never done gear/diff oil

my mates got some spare time at work tomorrow, so hes taking the disco in,im just going to drop it round there in a bit

il get him to do..

steering fluid flush out n sort out the slight friction i get when steering left, he said might possibly be a valve too
fit the egr and de cat pipe
the penny trick
and diagnose the cruise control fault/fix if its no parts/easy fix

as those bits i dont want to tackle myself and ensure they are done properly,and it will be running perfect then,and im hoping a nice noticable improvement in the ride

should i get him to maybe just do the diff and gear oil aswell or is that definatly east to do myself and do properly and confidently ?

You have to start some where and I'd suggest that the oil changes are a good place to start. Once you get some confidence you'll be doing timing belts and gearbox rebuilds this time next year.

Seriously though, just roll up your sleeves and go for it.

so with a diff , is it...undo a plug, empty, fill in from the top ? like an oil change ?

ive done oil changes no problem,coolent changes too, so can do the oil change no worries not fussed about that

diffs fill from the back half way up. stand disco on level ground and when the oil starts to come back out of the filling hole. The oil is at the correct level.

having it all done today bar the fluids, missing the disco, shel be home at about 6 , cant wait to feel the difference with the de cat and egr and other bits all done, and il tackle the fluids myself

some work on the disco , is it a reasonable price ?
