Some Techie Help Pls !!

Hi all.

Got me a 2001 TD5 Manual and have got a question regarding some "bits" underneath.

I am trying to find out the technical name for the two "drain/breather pipes" underneath the engine. Managed to break one of the clips so need to replace it. The pic below shows the part with the arrows pointing to the pipes ...

If anyone could help would be most appreciative, also can you drive without these pipes on or not recommended ??

You can drive with the pipes off but it is not recommended due to the increased risk of sucking water and crap into the guts of the gearbox and transfer box.

The pipes are easy to sort - get 20 feet of nice plastic hose about the right size to shove on the nipples, and lead them carefully up to the engine bay, all clipped and taped securely and well clear of the exhaust, brake drum, propshafts, and so on.

The upper ends of the pipes should be turned over to point down.

These are from your starter motor, I would guess they are there to act as a drain in case you get water inside. I think it would be safe enough to drive without them unless you are wading.

I didn't look closely enough!
But he should check if his gearbox and transfer box pipes are missing too.
Chances are.

These tubes are to drain away any condensation that may build up from wading.

i.e. hot engine parts come into contact with cold water, condensation will build up inside.

Some 4X4's (suzuki to name one) has these on the distributor cap to stop the engine from cutting out in water.
