I am garnering thoughts on solo green laning...... I have a friend coming over from Canada who is keen to experience the Welsh green lanes. I am an experienced off roader, military trained and with self rescue capability including winch etc.

The lanes I am looking to do I have done dozens of times in the past and none are really technically challenging.

Comments?

Its your decision and nobody elses. At the end of the day if you get stuck then its down to you. What if you break down and need a tow back to the road? If you go on your own then make sure you have a plan of action incase you need it. Remember.. prior preparation and planning prevents **** poor performance. Im sure youve heard that before during your training ;)

At the very least take someone's number from the LZ international rescue. Last rescue I helped out with was someone who went solo with his mates in the back. He was stuck for more than 60 hours and was very lucky not to have rolled 15ft down into the stream in the ditch next to him where there could have easily been fatalities.

Your own risk, but expect a lot of **** taking if nothing else when something goes pear shaped!

I go on my own 90 percent of the time and often late at night, so long as you dont do nothing silly nothing to worry about.
As said a couple of phone numbers are worthwhile, ive got the local taxi firms numbers as well so i can always go home drag the wife out of bed and use the other land rover to recover myself.
Good idea to recky the routs the week before so you are up to speed on whats what and where.

Thanks for the input. I was on the lanes that I intend on doing this weekend and they were all a non event.

so is the m25 most days but then........................

Indeed but if we worried about every little thing we would not get out of bed. Then we would get bed sores which would go septic and kill us anyway.....

It seems the general view is be prepared and don't do anything to wild. The lanes I want to do are all very benign and I will take an EPIRB just in case of emergency!

if you are going to do it anyway then why did you ask???

As I said originally I was interested in other peoples views. If people had come back with a catagoric no and supporting argument I would have considered it. What I now have is some good advice and a general view that its not a no no.

I never go on a lane by myself that I dont know really well or that is too far to walk out of if I need to get help.

Do it, just take it easy and be prepared to turn around. What kit are you taking with you? which lanes are you planning to, be interested to know. We drive the lanes in Wales on our own fairly often sometimes with a small group.

I had to read that twice then to make sure you hadnt been on the beer.

Then i realised its me whos been drinking and it does make sense. :der::D

Enjoy it take some numbers and common sense is your friend if it looks dodgy then decide weather or not to take it on. Always used to greenlane on my own no other bugger except a guy Mark on here used to come out years ago so it was my only option.

Lots of fun dare I say driving around just doing as many lanes en route as poss was alot of fun.

Suggest you take numbers they can't hurt. I once blew up a gearbox after a full days lone greenlane trip. I was on the way home and the gearbox erm well locked up spun me 360 on a slip road off the M11.

My old man came out and towed me home best part of 50 miles on my trusty 8m rope. P.s I must buy him a beer!

I did a few lanes last weekend on my own ,,,,,,,,,, then Monday on my way to work with NO WARNING my head gasket went and departed the engine bay providing me with a free steam cleaner , wouldn't have been so chirpy the previous day down a lane.

Hope you get that sorted soon mate. :)

BUT.....that is a good example of why you dont go alone. If that happens and your down a lane with any kind of terrain not befitting a recovery truck then the AA wont come out to you.

But like has been said, make sure your motors in tip top condition and have a few numbers with you and you should be ok.

I am happy the truck is sorted mechanically and always take a full toolkit with me and spares.

My plan is to do the lanes that start near Llangollen and head west towards Aberdovey, overnight in Aberdovey and then head east the next day. Wayfarer etc. All lanes that I have done many times.

Of course if anyone is interested in coming along i would be delighted for the company. Dates to be set between the 13-20th March when my mate arrives.

Im not sure Wayfarers is open, best check that.

It was open at the weekend as confirmed by the council. I never travel a lane either on my bike or landrover without checking the definitve council list before hand. I will of course check the status of any and all of the lanes before the trip. We have enough issues with the bobble hat brigade with creating more for ourselves!!
