Hi,

I have a Range Rover 1996 2.5 DSE. I am experiencing a clonking noise from the transmission when at slow speed and not usually under load - e.g breaking down before a roundabout. CV boots appear ok, as do front propshaft U/J's. There is a solid metal clonking down below.

Any ideas whats wrong?

feel diffs for play and smothness of rotation, jack front wheel up and turn in neutral if it wont turn with bar on stud viscous locked and buggered

Thanks for the replies!

I friend of mine who is a Audi mechanic took the car for a spin today. He is pretty sure that the UJ's and the transfer case is ok. The metal clunk is present when the transmission is shifting from second to first gear. The is also a a clunk in the case when the car is under load eg driving up a slope. The clunk occurs when the car is shifting from third to fourth gear. The transmission is going from third to fourth, than back to third with a loud clunk and back to fourth.

Could a faulty pressure regulating solenoid valve (MV 4) cause such a problem? Or is the problem related to a burned out clutch?
