:(... on top of the things I'd already highlighted, and it wasn't the best value for money, though it was clean looking, it turns out its a Cat D when I ran the HPI check. Worth their money those checks for sure.

So there's no way I'm going to pay top money for a Cat D write off. I've given an indication of what I will pay and it ain't much. got to drop £1500-£2000 at least.

The guy called the "trader" he bought from today, who informs him it was a Cat D due to being stolen recovered, but thats not what the HPI report says.
Either way, it will never not be a Cat D.

Back to autotrader and hunting around, a couple more to look at for almost a grand less anyway, though they are usually not in the best condition as they get a bit cheaper.

Oh well...

cat d is insurance claim but no major damage isnt it?
if it was stolen recovered wouldnt it be cat x as per : INSURANCE CATAGORIES

My 99/V Frontera 3.2 v6 was writted off as Cat D 2 years ago. It was very clean, lower than average miles.
It was valued at £3850 on the insurance pay out at the time.

The damage was all near side, wing, both doors, sills, and wheels. Bsically a BMW pulled out a side road, hit me and span me, causing what didn't look too bad damage wise, but was quite significant to repair. Also the assesor said "you just don't know what other damage was sustained" especially as the rear wheel took alot of the final impact.

So... what was a RR 4.6HSE worth 2.5 years ago? £8-10k? more? For it to be Cat D damage total loss write off, it's got to have sustained a reasonable amount of damage. my point mainly being that you just don't know.

I've looked into values this afternoon, and 30-50% of a non cat d car seems to be the general rule of thumb. Taking into consideration insurance companies that will insure, won't pay out the full amount they usually would on a non cat d.

So there's even more risk...

don't be in any hurry, as I said a p38 is only a toy and will break. Paid very little for mine and fixed a few gremlins.

My advice is buy a cheap on as if you buy an expensive one you are just wasting money.

cheap ones good as the money you would have spent on a nice one and more on fixing, fixes the cheap one and leaves spare cash
